20190330_113330.jpg first thing ditch the running boards. I went 285/70r17 on tires slightly rub a full lock. Theres a Facebook group and those guys go all out with they're rigs. Also bruteforce fab makes killer armor for them. Mine is 1st gen. 4.7l bulletproof motor. Gets crap fuel economy tho...lol.

Are there years that are better for off roading than others?

I read about a redesign that seemed to insinuate that on wikipedia, but honestly, I am not sure that is necessarily accurate.

Theres more aftermarket support for 1st gens. 2nd gen is hit or miss and latest is just not available yet. Also 1st gens are cheap. New will run you 70k fully loaded. They tow great also. I tow my camper and forget its there sometimes. With any luck i will start building mine up soon

I would avoid such a large vehicle if you're in the woods or on tight trails a lot. Early Sequoias are only marginally bigger than 5th gen 4Runners, though... I don't like the size of my '17 4Runner for trail use, I definitely wouldn't want anything bigger.

I'm sure they wheel "ok" but they are far from ideal. Driving my dad's Sequoia around the streets is like maneuvering a battleship, I can't imagine on a trail, lol.

Honestly, there isn't *that* much more stuff you can fit inside, anyway. There really is only a few more inches in all directions in the cargo area. Main thing you get is more seating room.

So unless you wheel with 7 of your closest friends or are 6'6" 320#, I'd avoid it for off-roading.

Old thread, but I’ll chip in with my thoughts anyway.

I went from 2013 DCLB Tacoma to a 2003 sequoia. It’s about a foot shorter and more maneuverable wheeling around lots or trails. It’s more than 1000 lbs heavier with a 4 speed tranny instead of 5, and it still gets better mileage than my Tacoma did.

I took out the second and third row seats and put in a full 10” thick memory foam twin size bed on an adjustable (inclining) steel bed frame. It doesn’t even come as far as the beginning on the rear passenger footwells, and there’s about a 12” wide void along one side of the bed. There a TON of room in it. Ive owned a 4Runner. This thing feels similar in size to a 2nd gen taco, but has a lot more room in it than a 4Runner.

I expected it to be a pig on fuel but if I go easy on the throttle and stick within 10 of the speed limit, I’m getting 20mpg.

Find one that’s been taken care of, with a clean frame (no rust) and I think it’s one of the best vehicles you can buy for the price.

    Heavy vehicle = Safe vehicle.

    Inertia is real.
