I want to install a gps tracker to my truck that is connected to the battery so that I dont have to bring it inside to charge, and then also remember to reinstall. Anybody know of, or recommend, a good one?

My thought is that it could be connected straight to the battery so that eliminates the charging issue. Also, as crooks are getting more and more savy these days, I was thinking it could be connected to the secondary battery (if available) so that they might not look there if thery knew of the potential for a tracker.

I am not a super paranoid dude or anything, but the more and more money I sink into my truck just makes me realize I need to take a few extra steps to protecting it from theft. My old ladys car got stolen a year or two ago. About a month after it was stolen, and a few days before the insurance company was going to cut a check, they found the car. Her insurance company told her that if it was drivable and not vandalized, she had to accept it back. I do not want this to happen to my truck.

Thanks everybody for any help and/or suggestions.

I figure if my truck gets stolen, that’s why I have insurance. Then I’ll buy a new one.

Yeah but if I can call the cops within a few minutes and tell them right where it is, that cant be a bad thing. Insurance wont always pay for all the add-ons and certainly wont pay for the time spent on modifications. And, there would be a tremendous amount of satisfaction being able to watch it all go down.

I friend of mine uses a Spot Tracker on his motorcycle. I believe they make several models. I have a link to it on my phone so I can keep an eye on him as he travels cross country.

They will if you itemize it.

If someone steals my truck, who knows what they’ve done to it - even it’s its only been a few minutes. And honesty I probably don’t want it back.

Even if you call the cops a few minutes afterwards (which I think is unlikely to happen anyway) it’s gokng to take them time to get there.

Does it connect directly to the battery?

True. I just figure it cant be a bad idea. I also dont want them to force me to take it back after it has been gone any length of time.

I am going to have to dig a little deeper. All the ones I am seeing are little handheld doodads. Not what I am looking for. If you find that link, please pass it on.

The unit itself is very small. But you can wire it directly to a keyed power source and it will turn on automatically .
I'll try to send a screen shot of what the track looks like.

I second this. I also sell them if anyone’s interested. If you’re considering a remote start with smart start app based add on, the GPS is also included as a feature to starting/stopping your engine as well as locking/unlocking your doors and checking your locked (or unlocked) status of your doors anywhere in the world. I would just go all the way since the price isn’t much different. You just need to also buy the remote start base unit if you go that route, definitely worth it considering you get to use your OEM fob to do the same thing your app does, just within range or if you’re too lazy to pull your phone out (and working OEM FOB operating range). PM me if interested, I hook up TW members!
