Not sure if I want to do this. I have a couple of cans of the plasti dip smoke. Looking to see if anyone has done heirs yet.

I would not recommend doing this. It is illegal for one, and two if some one runs into the back of you at night and the police make a report and list that your taillight a were illegally tinted, there is a good chance the insurance company of the other vehicle will not pay for damages.

This is just not true. It is area specific but in my area the law says tail lights must be visible at a specified distance away. Nothing about tinting etc. Lots of people tint them but they put superbright LEDs in to maintain visibility.

There was a pic on here somewhere but the guy got rear ended and his truck ended up having to be totalled.

Maybe in your area its overlooked. But in most states its illegal to tint lighting as front windows and even putting any kind of cover on your license plates, or not having a front one for that matter. Are you quoting some federal statute? All lights have to meet FMVSS criteria for lighting distance, which has nothing to do with tinting. An example in which I would use if I was the guy that rear ended a tinted tail light vehicle especially if it was raining at night is I never saw any tail lights and all of a sudden saw brake lights come on.

That is state dependent. Here the auto parts stores actually sell blacked out lenses. You can also get a cover that goes over your taillight in different designs. Now it can't be completely black, more of a smoke color that the light will shine through. So, I don't know if plasti dip will work or not, maybe look into a smoke lens when available.

Not only should you not do it because it is illegal in most states, it also looks stupid and makes you less visible to traffic. Why is this even a thing? Save the tinted tail lights for the riced out civics and clapped out 90's mustangs.

Just because they sale them at auto parts stores don't mean it's legal. Look on the box it probably says "for off road use only".

I called the police department to ask them about this. The reply I got was this: You will not get pulled over just for smoked taillights unless they are not visible at night, however, if you get pulled over for something else the officer may take note of the lights and further direction will given at that time. If you are involved in a collision in which you were rear ended, the lights visibility may be used as evidence against you.

So, I would not advise it OP.

My cousin stated a similar comment to me, and he's an officer. Which is the same he said about tinted windows in my area.

How dark are you trying to go? I tinted mine with a three light coats of VHT Nite Shades paint then 5 or 6 coats of clear. The difference in output between my lightly tinted lights and normal is minimal.

If you want to look like the VW crowd and give women the impression that you live with your parents, by all means, black em out.

To each his own. Better question. Why would you be a paramedic? Couldn't make it as a fire fighter?

If you're that defensive about it and want to do it that bad, then do it. You said you had plasti dip, if you don't like it peel it off.

You have awful thin skin for being in law enforcement, deputy.

I happen to be full time and part time employed by two different fire departments.
