Great card but playing at 4k on a 240hz monitor it just doesn't have the power for that now.

I mean, it's not the first time that nVidia cards have done this at launch either. Remember the 3090 capacitor issues? nVidia didn't enforce a specification for what capacitors should be used on the GPU, and some designs from Zotac and others would pop a cap without warning, then die. Not at launch, but a bit after that, the 3090 driver issues that fried the card if you played that Amazon game, I actually forget it's name, and didn't put a frame rate limit on the menus.

In fact, it's kind of funny when people say nVidia has bulletproof drivers. Sure, their day one drivers are great when new games come out. On new hardware though, poor track record as of late.

No I don't recall prior Nvidia issues. I've been on the Mac side for decades and if part shortages continue I'll likely stay there.

Apple pulled such a hiest with TSMC. It was truly epic foresight to design their own chips. Not just because they've done it so well. Apple grew to the size where they get first crack at the new nodes at TSMC, they are TSMCs golden goose. They not only stay ahead of ARM by using 1-2 process nodes past what Qualcomm has, they also have the rights from TSMC to every wafer on the newest node they want, which hurts the ability of anyone to catchup.

I will say it's cool to see AMD try to catchup though. There's a solid chance that Strix Halo will be faster than any M4 variant, which is incredible given the gap that existed even two years ago between AMD mobile chips and Apple.

Nvidia has been making ARM chips but they are supposed to be entering the consumer market to compete with Apple soon, I dunno when haven't read about it in a bit but that'll be interesting.

I pulled this quote from the reddit swamp, take it with a grain of salt but releases

    Nvidia SoC = 2025H2.
    Apple M5 = 2025Q4.
    Intel Panther Lake = 2025Q4.
    Snapdragon X2 = 2026Q1.

    No AMD through these quarters.

Not sure when Strix Halo releases...Zen6 maybe 2nd/3rd quarter 2026?

Yeah, nVidia already makes ARM server and AI chips. Grace Hopper is ARM based. That being said, they aren't, yet, planning on consumer ARM chips. They are developing an ARM CPU for Windows PC's, but it's in a partnership with MediaTek. MediaTek is building the CPU, nVidia is designing the NPU and GPU for that chip. Lots of people call it an nVidia CPU, but it will likely sell under a new brand or under the MediaTek powered by nVidia branding.

Strix Halo launched at CES, technically. We won't see a laptop with it though for 2-3 months. Zen 6 is targeted for 2026. Intel Panther Lake might be scratched, or reworked. I read that in a summary of the last interview their co-CEOs gave.

    Society is doomed

"I have just upgraded from 4090FE to 5090FE"

No stronger marketing term has existed, ever.

I'll never understand founders editions. Or why people think others should pay more for them.

All these connector issues always feel like people don't know how to fully insert the plug.

    And they'll sell too.

I'm not gonna be that person that'll try to convince anyone to not spend their money, it's their money.

But people will often sink themselves (financially) just to have the latest and greatest because they feel obligated to constantly "upgrade".

It's crazy how it's helped the market where people would get rid of their 5-6 year old car after paying it off because they were ready to upgrade, just like they would a cell phone.

Creates tons of e-waste and it makes companies produce products that aren't repair-friendly. They want you to toss that 3 year old Macbook to buy the newest version.

In this case, they are saying the plug was fully inserted. Early blame, and yes people deflect, may be pointing towards a bad PSU cable and he did overclock the card so the cable was likely moving 600 watts or more.

It's too bad the boards that carried the power to the gpu never caught on. I'd say they need to start moving forward on finding better solutions for sending 300W+ to a card.

My card has 3xPCI8 and its stupid. 3 slots with chance for failure, but reduced because the power is distributed better.

I’ve only used wired so wired doesn’t bother me to much. But I was wanting to try wireless.
