    Yeah.
Yup, I remember those days, and I had a 3dfx Banshee at one time, probably a Voodoo as well. Before those days, I once went to an electronics shop and found a caterpillar chip to upgrade my video memory from 512K to 1024K. Didn't really change anything, but was cool to see it boot up with more memory. That was back when most games didn't even run on Windows. X-Wing and Tie Fighter, and one of my favorites, the old System Shock, loosely based on the Neuromancer novel by William Gibson.

Application programming interface. It’s a catch all for software like DirectX, OpenGL, and Vulkan which allow for programs to directly access the resources they need without as much operating system overhead.

Yeah they install just components of DirectX9.0c but not the entire package. Windows 10 is actually probably the best for compatibility with older games since Windows XP. Vista was a train wreck for compatibility and 7 was only slightly better.

Yeah, everything would back out into MS DOS before running because that was the only way to run games with direct access to the hardware. It took years for OpenGL and DirectX to get good enough for companies to rely on them inside the Windows OS and even then the games would only work with a very specific version of DirectX that often had to be loaded on the game disc lol. What a mess.

Actually it’s funny. The Microsoft team with the most industry interaction and testing is the DirectX team. Which is why while OS updates are often buggy DirectX works right pretty much every time with new games and video card drivers. Microsoft does not want Vulkan or OpenGL to become better standards than DirectX because that would open the door to even more Linux users playing games natively.

    Yeah.
Sent me down an internet rabbit hole, those both look pretty cool (for the time). I was mainly into girls and cars then, although I did enjoy an Atari game at times and may have played M.U.L.E at some point.

    Yeah.
Played all of them. Plus the original Team Fortress game that came with it as a freebie, first foray into online team gaming. Played over a 56K modem, one of my prized possessions at the time -- it was a Hayes hardware modem with IRQ jumpers, not one of those cheap ass Winmodems that were totally unstable. Game had a connection tuning overlay, allowing you to tweak things to improve the online experience. Loved setting up sentry guns as an engineer.

I've set swap not to be used until all ram is full. I only really have it in case some program/script is misbehaving. That 970 is tempting though.

Did anyone else run dual 56k modems back in the day?
I did for about 3 months before cable finally showed up. Was a pain in the ass to sync but once it was set up correctly, it was smokin!!!

Why go with a 970 when you can get an Optane 900 series drive? I actually run both lol.
