Hey all, by any chance does anyone know of any place or anyone selling puppies? I’m in the market but im having trouble finding any decent sellers. Looking for a medium/large size breed.
I’m located in Sacramento but I am willing to travel if need be.

    My truck needs a sidekick.
Here’s my truck on the 50 headed back from Tahoe.

If you’re going to buy a dog, buy from a REPUTABLE, ETHICAL breeder. Not some dirt bag backyard breeder off Craigslist.

Or rescue one from the shelter or a rescue.

    This rescue is my favorite.

Petfinder is a good starting place as they have listings copied from most of the shelters or rescue groups

I’ve been sending applications on pet finder for the last 2 weeks. With no luck. I only had one reply back to me from front street animal shelter but they said it wasn’t a good match since the dog did not do well with small dogs. We have a small terrier so if I adopt, the dog has to have a good temperament with smaller dogs. That’s kinda why I want a puppy so they can adjust to our dog.

Petfinders will usually list the agency that has the dog up for adoption and you will have better luck contacting the rescue group directly once you see a dog you think is a match. However different rescue groups have different rules and some have long waiting lists of people looking for a pet. I had applications with 4 breed specific rescue groups, went through phone interviews , inquired about several dogs that came up on their website and waited 6 months without success despite their websites showing dogs being adopted and new dogs coming in. Finally applied with a mixed breed rescue group based on a picture on Petfinders and took that same dog home within 2 weeks.

Have you looked at Ruff Pack or Foothill Dog Rescue? I agree, it's easier to contact the rescue directly. We got our dog from Foothill several years ago, it was a great experience.

It would be hard to find a true puppy from a rescue place... we wanted a newborn (sort of). They usually go home at about the 8 week mark. Man we hard the hardest time finding one with any availability in the area. Because of the pandemic, lots of people have been looking for pups I guess. We ended up reserving from a reputable breeder in the Idaho area and even then he won't be ready to go home until April. Good luck in your search!

Before you begin. Take a bit of time to research the different breeds and their characteristics. Figure out what you want from a dog.

Go to a breeder or a rescue. Be patient. It may take a while to find the dog for you.

DO NOT BUY FROM A PET STORE!!!! You could use a pet store to "try on" a breed. Rescues will allow a meeting with the dog.

If you decide to use a breeder, learn the markings of a breeder. For instance, there are many designer dogs on the market for insane prices. Typically, these come from puppy mills and are actually MUTTS. Nothing wrong with mutts, just no need to pay pure breed price.

Keep in mind. This is a serious commitment. Puppies require alot of time, training, patience for at least a year. Some larger breed take longer. Even the adult dog will require time every day. There will be accidents, learn how to clean up.

Training can be trying depending on the dog's intelligence and your patience, assertive attitude. Very few breeds (IMHO none) respond well to negative or punishment. Never strike or "rub the dog's nose in it". This treatment will not be beneficial in the long haul. The punishment is lack of reward.

As an example. I was looking for an Airedale or Welsh Terrier. I came across a litter of Miniature Schnauzers. Did my research, decided to go look. Went to the breeder. Met the litter, the Sire and the Dam, saw the welping box and the kennels. One particular pup would go play, then come back to me. This continued for about 45 minutes. I decided to buy this pup after a VET exam. Breeder offered his Vet, I refused. I went to my Vet. The pup was healthy and had is 1st round of immunizations. I took him home, he was 10 weeks old. After 14 months, I had him neutered. This was nearly 5 years ago. Today, Shadow and I are always together. I keep him immunized, parasite free, annual health check, walk 3-4 hours/day broken into 3-5 outings, regular grooming and bath............ During the 1st year, we had many troubles.

My wants in a dog were High Intelligence, High bonding, low shedding, long life, few breed health issues, less than 30 lbs. The lifespan of this breed averages 12-15 years.

Here he is.....about 2 yo needing a haircut.

Mixed breeds are healthier than pure bred and cost less. Insurance is less because they are healthier.

Last year we decided to get our first dog together. I was raised with coon hunting and show dogs (small time, hounds), but that is really a different world. We decided not to mess with the pups and sought a ~2yr, female, ~40lbs Australian shepherd, heeler and/or border collie mix. These are some of the smartest breeds. Soon my wife became infatuated with the border collies and we narrowed our search. We closely monitored all the shelters in SOCAL - that's a lot of shelters. Each time a border collie showed up online, we called or rushed in to check it out. Every time the border collie was already adopted. They get snatched up quickly. Eventually my wife found a border collie listed on facebook. Eight months old, purchased from a breeder, woman lived in a condo and the dog needed more space. These are not cheap dogs, but she just wanted to find a good home with no reimbursement. We gave her a couple hundred$ because she had meticulously kept up with shots, etc. We got lucky and we are happy with Jackie.

I swear 70% of the dogs in shelters around here are "pit bull" mixes. They are supposed to be good dogs when cared for properly.

And we couldn't be happier with Jackie. She is a very fast learner.

I’ve been looking at different shelters but most are over a year old or don’t pair up well with a small dog. I actually would love a blue heeler but haven’t found any in the area.

    good luck in your search.

i married a loving woman that is vehemently against buying a dog. i am okay with it since i enjoy ALL dogs. having said that, it is rare you can adopt a dog with zero issues. my current dog is the smartest dog i have ever met. that is both a good thing, and a bad thing. he like me, tends to overthink things. haha.

i would love to hang out end of days with a cool as hell, custom mixed breed. well adjusted, confident, etc.

my dog got beat up a a dog kennel and now i have to deal with his PTSD with all things "other dog" he just cant handle seeing other dogs. he freaks a bit. he is getting better and better. best frisbee dog i have ever met. best swimmer. he will out swim LABS. he is okay with other dogs if he is fetching. he focuses so hard on the toy, he ignores other dogs. that is our way in to his psychosis. hahha.

get what you want. if you happen to adopt. YAY!! if you buy..good as well. you do what you do..dont feel guilt if you buy.

The heeler was my first choice. Wife wanted BC. We did the right thing and came to an equitable solution. She got her border collie.

I have owned pure breeds all my life. Last dog we had was a rescued mix breed Rottweiler, Sharpei mix. Best dog I ever owned. Super loyal and extremely grateful for saving them.

My extremely oversized Frenchie and I have had a good year riding in the taco, good luck on your search OP! My girlfriend and I looked for months for a rescue, but apparently so did the rest of the damn world. I recommend Rocket Dog Rescue in San Francisco, they're good people, and always make sure the dogs and owners are right for each other.
