Hi everyone! Been lurking on the forums for several weeks just reading and learning. My apologies if this isn't in the right place but there's so much info that I was getting overwhelmed...major analysis paralysis.

I recently purchased a wonderful cement grey 2020 TRD Off-Road DCSB and now I'm looking for a hard tonneau cover to protect my stuff from the elements and make it harder for a perp to steal whatever might be back there.

The perfect tonneau cover solution probably doesn't exist but in a perfect world, these are the attributes that I would want:
    • Retractable (doesn't have to be electric)
    • Slim profile
    • Ability to add stuff on top, mainly interested in eventually putting on a tent so I can sleep on top of the truck bed instead of on the ground
    • Waterproof (as much as possible)
    • Matte black poly is fine, doesn't have to be aluminum
    • Locking
    • Around $1200-$1500
    • Preferably made in the USA
During my search, I've seen a lot of good options such as the RETRAX ONE XR and stuff from Pace Edwards, but I haven't seen anything about a camper/tent setup being possible on top, mostly just bike racks and storage with 150lb weight limits. Does anyone know of anything that would satisfy my criteria?

    Thanks!

Well, it doesn't lock, per se, but I have the OEM cover. I also hear Diamondback makes some good options as well. I also have the KB Voodoo rack system which allows me to mount a tent with the tonneau cover also on. It doesn't actually attach to the cover so the weight rating is a non-factor.

Thanks for the ideas! These are actually pretty rad and mostly satisfy my criteria, except that what if I have to move a sofa or something? I was kinda hoping that I could get all those features, but with the ability to retract the cover and use the truck as a truck when it's time to haul stuff around. I tend to move a lot.

You can retract the OEM as it is tri fold. But, it's easier to remove. Two straps keep it folded up and one bolt attaches it to the truck. The rest is attached with latches from the inside. Anything on a track system is not going to be compatible with the KB Voodoo system though.

Also, you mentioned Retrax. Check out Paragon instead. It is easier to remove and doesn't take up bed space like the Retrax does.

Actually KB Voodoo confirmed with me that their tonneau brackets are compatible with some retractables including my truckcoverusa, but I don’t think this is the direction OP is trying to go.

I REALLY like this setup! That's exactly what I had in mind. It looks like there's a dealer in my small town. If you don't mind me asking, how much was the retractable cover and how has it been with keeping water out?

It just depends how it is made. As long as the bracket can get under the track, it should work.

    Hi

I got lucky and scored mine second hand off CL from a TW member. It was actually for a 2nd gen but the only difference is the 3rd gen side rails are shorter so I was able to cut them down and it fits perfectly. Think I paid about 1k for it. I’ve seen a couple other second hands for about the same price or a little less over the past year. I’ve seen a couple retrax covers here too goin for about 6-800 but the retrax don’t all come with channels for a bed rack so careful if you go that route.

As for water it doesnt rain too much where I am, so I haven’t even installed the drain tubes, probably never will, whenever I wash my truck the only water I see coming in is thru the drain tubes so it prol does pretty good in rain.

    here’s a good review: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/american-roll-cover-review.539981/#post-25094556

    cheers

I have the Truck Covers USA retractable with rails and the Yakima HD bar kit over the top. Really like the set up so far. I wanted the retrax and think it may be better, but this one allows you to open from the inside.

It doesn't look very "mini" in that pic, hah. Those things are super $$...better be worth it!

I am interested in the Truck Cover USA. Is there a vender on TW that sells these? Maybe with a discount?
