I have had an annoying squeaking the past few weeks. I've noticed it more with the warmer weather and the windows down lately. I got out today and tried to find the culprit. The exhaust is fine. The rear tire is secure. Greased the drive shaft. I lubed up everything that possibly could take wd40 or grease. I jumped up and down on the bumper and it's silent. I have no idea what else it can be, but as soon as I put it in drive/reverse and start rolling, the noise starts. It's a shrill squeak that increases in frequency as I speed up, then eventually it stops or its just that I can't hear it over the tires. It doesn't do it any more or less when I'm pushing the brakes. Just mainly when I start up. And if I just slowly roll, I can hear it make a few squeaks every rotation. Sometimes I get a few squeaks after a rain and mud, but they usually go away after a few days. This one has gone on for weeks. And I can't think of anything to have caused it. Any ideas?

Or possibly a tiny rock lodged in the caliper somewhere?

How could I check that? I am over 76,000 miles and haven't changed the rear brakes

You have brake shoes in the back, but it's possible that's your noise. You didn't specify if the noise was for sure front or rear

Next time it makes the noise gently apply the parking brake see if the noise stops. If so, there's your culprit.

Sorry. I'm 99 percent sure it's from the rear. I will try that out tomorrow

Ok, apparently it's a bad u joint. I'm going to have somebody else look at it tomorrow to be sure. I appreciate the help so far, just another question. Is there a certain brand of u joint that I want? I've saw a lot online for around $12-15 and the local parts store has some for $13. I did see some online for around $25 too, and I'm sure the OEM Toyota ones are high. I don't mind paying a few more dollars for something that is better, but I don't know if there is any advantage to these higher ones or not. Also, I do know that I want one with a grease fitting.

Im having mine replaced this week, with new OEM ones. I took it into a drive shaft shop to do it. I had the same squeeking problem mainly between 20-35 mph, then I greased them and noticed the rear one wouldnt take grease and looked mangled.

Does it sound like a piece of wire wrapped around the driveshaft that increases with road speed ? & in reverse ?

If it does its a U joint

I'm not sure, it's sorry of like the sound of rubber or styrofoam squeaking pretty much any time the truck is in gear and moving.

Also, apparently my front left wheel bearing is shot, according to the guy I left it with. He said that it may or may not be the noise, but that it needs to be replaced. So I guess I'm going to have that done and then worry about the noise after that is fixed

Just got off the phone with the driveline shop, they put in beefier aftermarket U joints that are non greasable and should last 100k+.

Not to hijack your thread, but wow the ride is so smooth now. Got 3 new U joints and a new carrier bearing and the whole thing rebalanced. It rides like a luxury car now.

And how much did you pay. I just replaced all of mine as well as carrier bearing. I believe my squeak chirp noise is coming from my rear leaf pack. I forgot the rubber between them

$120 in labor + $200 parts, not including the time to remove and reinstall the driveshaft.

Well I ended up getting my truck back the other day. I called to check on it and they had replaced the front right wheel bearing and the front brakes. Problem one is that I didn't ask for that or really have the money for that. Problem two is that when I got down the road a little bit after getting my truck, I could still hear the noise. Yes, I probably did need new brakes soon, and the wheel bearing was going bad, but I was pissed that it was still making the noise, which was the whole reason I brought it in. I didn't even take it back because apparently they are deaf and cannot hear the noise.

I ended up going to O'reillys the same day and getting three new universal joints because they had some in stock. They were Precision part #354 and cost about $15 each. They had some O'reilly brand for $9 each, but these had a lifetime warranty. I won't go into detail about the change out, but it was moderately easy. I used just basic tools that about anyone would have and followed a video on youtube. Sure enough one of the caps that have the roll pins in it was dry and rusted; somehow it was not getting any grease. And it was coming from the rear u-joint, right where I heard it. Also, the rubber seals on almost all of them were gone or busted. I went ahead and changed all three, since you have to take the whole driveshaft out anyway.

    Called it....

Glad you got it handled & yeah if you didn't authorize it (other repairs) no way in hell should you have to pay for it, it's on their dime, seeing how they missed the issue that brought you to them in the first place
