So the head unit won't let me use Waze when it's plugged into the USB. Waze will automatically close and refuse to open. Trying to open it on the touch screen with Andoid Auto as a source gives me an error to open Waze before connecting it to the USB but you can see the map in the background. But it closes once you plug it in.

Oddly enough, it randomly worked for 2 mins yesterday when I had given up and just used Google Maps. As I was pulling into my destination it took over and worked. Google Assistant chirped up and said something like "Transferring to Waze" and it popped up on the head unit like it should. Tried to use the Assistant to open it later and it refused to open.

Anyone have a fix or work around? I like running Waze when driving due to speed traps and like using the USB for my audio source since it sounds better than using Blue Tooth.

Going to guess it’s something to do with versions between your phone and Waze. I’ve run it on my 21 on CarPlay no problem. Make sure Waze is the latest version, your phone is up to date, and to a hard restart on the phone. I’ve found that fixes the majority of weird smart phone behaviors.

Sure as shit that fixed it. Wound up uninstalling Waze and Android Auto and reinstalling it and it worked finally.

I tried it months ago and there was a known big with android auto and waze. I could not get it to work so i went back to google maps which makes no real difference if you are looking to no get tracked by google since they own Waze too.

Google has released several updates to the android auto app in the last few weeks. make sure your phone is up to date with the newest version of AA.
I like that waze tells you when the cops are and when there's accidents more quickly than a Google maps but I think Google maps runs better.
