Android auto: Adjusting volume forces spotify to start playing.

Wasn't sure if I should post in here or in the AV forum.

The majority of time when using Android Auto on the head unit, if listening to something from another source, and I adjust the volume either on the steering wheel or the head unit, it automatically starts playing spotify. Really effing annoying when I'm trying to listen to something other than spotify because it effectively makes it so I can't touch the volume.

Found a few threads on reddit of people with the same complaint specific to other Toyotas... but haven't found anyone whose come up with a workaround or solution.

Anyone else experience this? Really hoping someone knows a workaround.

I can't figure out exactly what causes this because it doesn't always do it... just most of the time. Really wish I could figure out what I'm doing the other handful of times it doesn't happen.

 

When I unlock my phone while I’m listening to the radio, Spotify opens up. It is annoying and haven’t figured out how to stop that either. Subbed to see what solutions other have.

 

I think this is part of what causes the problem and may be worth exploring for trying to nail down replication of the problem.

I like to listen to some YouTube channels podcast style (I have YouTube premium so it'll play the audio with the phone screen turned off), but with Android Auto going so I can have Waze on the big screen. So yea... I have to unlock the phone to start the youtube video, then turn the screen off... and if I touch the volume knob then Spotify starts blasting. Super frustrating.

Hoping the collective wisdom of TW can shine some light on this!

 

Oh, I forgot to mention I have an iPhone not an android. And yes I text and drive, well just at stops. Sorry.

 

1. Open the phone's 'Settings' menu.
2. Tap on 'Apps' setting to open it.
3. Scroll to find 'Spotify' and tap.
4. Then find the 'Battery' setting.
5. Disable 'Allow Background Activity. '

Spotify monitors your phone, when you do something it thinks means you want to listen to music it will auto turn on.

I have the same issue with pandora

 

This seems to have worked on my commute home today. Beers on me next time you visit California. Seriously that shit was driving me bonkers.

@mrkothegigolo give it a shot but replace Spotify with pandora.

Samsung S21 Ultra here. Thought I would update this thread with what seems to have worked for me.

I did the above 1-4 but when I got to 5 my options were Unrestricted, Optimized, and Restricted of which Optimized was chosen. I switched the setting to Restricted and it seems for now to have worked.

Hope this helps someone.

 

settings, apps, android auto, additional settings in the app,customize launcher and uncheck everything so they are all now hidden apps. then it works.
