Hello! I'm new to this forum as I just purchased my first ever Tacoma. It's a 2017 model and I don't like how the Drl work on this truck. I hate that I have to put it on the "auto" setting for it to be on. Does anybody know how to make the led strip around the headlight just stay on without the headlights being on?

Don't you just click the switch to parking light mode?

Yes you can switch to the parking light but the tail lights will be on too. I don't want the tail lights on. I want just the led strip on.

The LED strip is on in "auto".Whats the problem with this? You can disable the headlights from turning on in the radio menu.

Yeah, the LED DRL's ARE on with the switch in Auto...and the headlights are NOT on...when its daylight out. Now, if you want your LED DRL's only even though its dusk/dark, then your only option is to adjust the sensitivity in the menu for when the headlights do come on. You can't run around town at night with only your LED DRL's...if that's what you're wanting.

And to add to this. Please do not drive around with just the DRLs on at night. They are not meant to light anything up, just there for looks

That is a good idea. But they DRLs aren't just for looks. They do make your truck more visible during extremely bright days and during the dusk and dawn periods before the lights turn on (when in auto mode).
There is a minimum amount of lumens that they have to put out to be legal.

    DRLs aren't required by law.

DRL are always on unless you turn the knob to "off". If you have it on auto, the DRL will always be on, they dim when the headlights go on. If your parking brake is up, the DRL are off until you disengage the parking brake.

Unless you're in Canada, Denmark, Finland, Hungary, Iceland, Norway, or Sweden where they are required by law. :D

I see idiots driving with only led drls on all the time at night. I dont think its on purpose, i think the idiot behind the wheel thinks their lights are on.

The problem I think is that on a lot of cars the dash and instrument lights are on even during the daytime. So at dusk they can see everything and it doesn't occur to them that their headlights / tail lights aren't switched on.

Most people just don't have the situational awareness to notice the difference.

Like I said, DRLs aren't required by law. I Don't give a shit about a bunch of other countries.

That's nice, but whether you care or not is irrelevant to Toyota having to follow those laws to sell trucks in those countries. They'll build the DRLs to emit the minimum lumens for those countries, and it's unlikely they're redesign and build a whole different set for the US market.
