I scored a slightly used Yakima Overhaul HD rack system for less than half what it retails for my new Tacoma, but Yakima tells me they will not have the required track kit 1 (8001168) for mounting to the bed rail until late July. Has anyone found an alternative mounting solution for these to the Tacoma accessory rail? I’ve found a few threads on this, but no solutions yet. Maybe there is a way by utilize T slot nuts in the rail with additional hardware? Thanks for any insight.

I had the same issue for a while looking for an outpost HD. Took me months to get one that worked with the T-slot bed covers. 2 months wait really isnt bad.

After a few months of beating it to shit and upgrading my truck more, turns out I needed a shorter rack anyway to fit in my garage. Found the uptop overland rack and have been happy ever since. More stable overall with 3 contact points instead of 2 for the RTT, significantly less wobble at speed offroad than the Yakima rack. I will say the Yakima didn't move in it's mounting position, it just wobbled significantly offroad. Also the mounting points on the side of the uptop rack are much better than the Yakima options - Yakima does not push things far enough out from the bedside, requiring custom spacers to hold most things. At least for the mid-height racks. If I had to do it again I would go with the Uptop option first.

You’re not wrong, 2 months isn’t that bad, but I want it now! Haha. In terms of width and stability, I do need wide cross bars for carrying up to 4 whitewater kayaks on road trips and shuttles when the bed is being used for other gear.

I’m going to go to the hardware store and see if I can find something that will work with t-nuts for the interim, if not I’ll just have to wait…

Any luck with the DIY plan? I’m in the same boat.

Ordered. They will be here June 1. Will let you know once I get them. Probably work on them next Sat. Got 20% off at the REI anniv sale this weekend.

I ended up jerry rigging my own fit kit. I ordered 8 t-nuts off Amazon that fit in the bed rail and then went to the hardware store and bought 8 steel angle brackets along with nuts, bolts, and washers that fit the t nuts and the tower bolts. It’s actually rock solid, but I’ll probably still get the bed track kit 1 when they are back in stock, supposedly some time in July.

It works for my needs of carrying 2-4 whitewater kayaks. Not sure I would trust it with a roof top tent, 2 people, and a dog though!

Try and contact your local shops they may have it. Even if Yakima doesn't that just means they sent all their kits out.

Ok kids I got my rack tonight and I think this will be easier than I thought!
    Shared 1.jpg

Pace-Edwards Tonneau with Thule crossbar mounts on it. Need to move those or remove before installing the Yakima HD.

This will cover mounting the Yakima HD (YHD) WITHOUT the tonneau "conversion" kit. Which is basically a large chunk of overpriced rubber with a few bolts that is out of stock until July or Aug

The YHD comes with mounting feet that attach to the normal bed without a tonneau. There is a special locking pin on the sides of them that unscrews out. They seem to be a perfect length to reuse.
    Shared 6.jpg

The locking pin does NOT bottom out in the slot when inserted thru the hole in the rack leg. The washer obviously goes between the bolt head and the frame of the rack foot. So an appropriately sized nut slid in thru the track and you have a solid connection with locking capabilities!
I am hitting Home Depot tomorrow to get the parts I need. Too tired tonight.

    Shared 7.jpg

Hard to keep the leg upright but you can see how the locking pin fits in. The middle "chamber" or slot of the bottom of the leg straddles the tonneau slots. the one to the left of the center one just rests on the tonneau frame. The other side just hangs slightly over the edge. I will be getting a thin piece of rubber to put between the tonneau rail and the feet of the YHD to keep it from metal to metal contact. I was also thinking of getting a thick piece of rubber to fill the gap between the rail on the far right and the side of the truck bed. Might look cheesy but it would be clamped down by the YHD base.

I got this SS bolt from KB Voodoo Fabrications when they were working on their tonneau adaptor. They sent me a packet of bolts to test for them. Round head with the threads squared off to the size of the slot. I will just get some hex headed stainless steel grade 8 bolts to do the same thing. Even a toilet bolt might work. Anyway, heading to the store tomorrow. Will post an update on what bolts, nuts, etc that I get with photos of the SKU numbers. I will probably end up getting the official Yakima adaptor when available because it will have a cleaner look.

I will end up getting stainless bolts and nuts that are grade 8. Grade 8 hardware is really stout and is used in automotive engine applications.

Already called every Yakima dealer within an hour radius and it’s the same answer everywhere…

I checked a bunch of places too, even stores on the East Coast. Zip, zero, nada.

Those angle brackets are heavy duty as hell. I used one to build a trailer hitch for my mini bike (196cc fat tire motorcycle).
