my wheels are horrible from road salt.

I have hit the m with the wire wheel to get all the "powder" removed.
The rustolem allow wheel paint i picked up is REALLY BRIGHT silver and glittery. I dont want disco wheels.

The original wheel paint was a bright grey but not quite that crazy bright.

Anyone have a source for a decent looking alloy wheel paint that would more match the original? Id like to prep, prime and spray these just to rejuvenate them a bit while im tearing into everything else.

This is way more than you asked for, but Dupli-Color is good. Here was my process; not the OEM silver, but they do have that color if you want it.

I re-sprayed some black aftermarket wheels on my beater. It is definitely a little bright. I could have done a better job masking but it ain't no show truck. Hard to beat @ $5 a can (on sale). I used 1 can (5 coats), and some primer I had lying around (2 coats).

I'd buy this case, will get you the best per can price and is about what you'll need qty wise

You need to use a zinc chromate primer for alloys.

seems much cheaper locally at $6 a can but thanks. Might be worth the extra $4 to ship and not to get the virus and die.

I used the Dupli-Color Professional Self-Etching Primer (I have no idea if it's zinc chromate), and I've had zero chipping or problem; wheels still look like the day I painted them... well, except for areas with rock rash, !

Yah, if you can get it cheaper, by all means. Around me, it's $10/can. Gotta love the Seattle area for prices... :pout:

Hey yarb71, do you have the type rims like I do on my '03? I don't deal with salt, but mine definitely don't shine anymore and the high spots on the rim (arrows below) I guess is where the paint is coming off??
I'm trying to decide if I'm just going to scuff them with some gray 3M pads and reapply clear coat or do a complete respray with the silver.

i patched a few spots in the bed of my 2004 and went to use the DUPLICOLOR color match for Toyota sliver. Trust me ...it isnt a match at all. It looks like hell. Way too bright and too much metal flake shiny. This stuff is worthless. Looks like the Tin Man from Wizard of oz Wiped his ass with the bed of my truck and my wallet. Stay away from this stuff. Complete waste of money and time. Good thing its the inside of the bed so who cares. I could have gotten off a lot cheaper though and not wasted my time looking for a true color match (which this truly isnt).

I agree 100%! Not a good match, and as you stated way to bright.

I recently ordered a 12oz spray can of paint from automotivetouchup.com and it matches the factory color ('03 Lunar Mist Metallic) way better. Especially after applying clear coat over it.

The Duplicolor Hyper Silver is a close match. I'm either going with that or use the paint I purchased above. The paint I purchased above is an oem match for the truck color and appears to be just a tad darker silver than what's on the rim.
Good Luck with your project and please post some pics when completed.

That's exactly what I have in the closet for when I redo mine. i've used it before and it's an awesome product. It states on the can to be used within 48hrs but I don't think I'd wait that long.
That's like POR-15. I only order the small cans because for the life of me I can't get it to last for more than a couple of days after opening. I used multiple layers of saran wrap before putting the lid back on, and then placed in a zip lock back and it still hardens up in less than a week.

Thanks for the link on that paint. Ive already sprayed and im into this for $11 already. Had i known this other had existed and was 100% the actual color at $20 a can i would have done it but for now ill just run this. It looks dumb as hell but its in the bed and its a truck......not the hood of a Ferrari. Its meant to get a bit jacked up so i guess it doesnt matter too much. Its just stupid they can advertise it has a match i guess. (and here come the comments about how i should have tested it in a spot and blah blah i just use my SnapOn paint sprayer for $4000 etc).......hehe.

If i get fed up with the look, i can alway get a can of this stuff and hit it. Thanks again. Sorry to sound like a bitter asshole but you know how it is....you bust your butt to try and do and good or decent job....and now this. Its just dissapointing......but i guess thats my whole existence for the last 40+ years so why should i assume any different. IM right on track!

Hey man, don't feel like the Lone Ranger. I'm with you. When I sprayed the Duplicolor "OEM" silver, I was like, "damit, this looks like shit!"

yeah....live and learn. I might email them and suggest they change the name to "Tin Man Ass Wipe Silver" because it certainly has nothing to do with Toyotas. Probably pointless though. They dont care. They already got my money and chances are they would just blame covid. Seems like the popular thing to do these days. Not our fault...must have been something else....
