Came across this video on my YouTube feed and this guy claims all 3rd gens need re-gearing because stock gears actually underperforms. Claim seems dubious but curious to know what you guys think.

    1. Regearing a bone stock truck can definitely make sense depending on your driving habits (but probably doesn’t make sense for literally any new tacoma owner who doesn’t plan to modify or add significant weight to their truck)

    2. That guy owns Nitro gears and def knows what he’s talking about

    3. Toyota engineers also know what they’re doing, so there is a reason they didn’t put different gears in stock 3rd gen Tacoma’s (offering different gears probably doesn’t make sense from a factory standpoint, across a lineup of 3rd gens) my guess.

    4. The owner of nitro gears would probably benefit from a large amount of 3rd gen tacoma owners getting new gears.

    5. You can’t “see” gears on an Instagram post, so odds are most people will still buy bed racks and 35’s before they even consider doing a regear.

    6. Maybe toyota did that gearing for the sake of emissions only? Maybe that was the priority in the hearing conversation at the Toyota table. I dunno

A guy trying to sell gears from a regearing shop. Seems legit.

My mpg gauge also resets when I refuel. His tank is full. Yes if I’m scooting around town, it stays low, but my truck does not get 14.6 mpg, even if city driving. That mpg meter is definitely not accurate.
And I’ve had the meter say 16.8 and when I did the actual math with miles and gallons after a fuel up, it was 21.

It’s a known fact these trucks are designed to run at higher rpms for power, but stay low in the rpms for efficiency. Nothing is stopping you from regearing but I don’t agree that these trucks require them out of the factory. That’s just his sales pitch

I drive 16 mikes a day in stop and go and I get around 18MPG. compared to my F-250 that only got around 11MPG I am happy.

I have a 40 mile round trip daily commute with sliders, loaded toolbox in the bed and a +1 tire size.

For 3 years I've been averaging 20 mpg tank and have been happy with it. My old 1st gen averaged about 15mpg.

I guess I'm good and dont need the regear.

Odds are high that this particular semi-retarded asshat knows more about gears than 99% of the forum members here, though.

Gears are definitely still affected by instagram hype too- all these "overlanders" with 4.88s or higher on 33s or lower make me chuckle. Im over here doing just fine on 35s with my stock 4.30s. Gears will happen, but Im not in a hurry

Winter, in the mountains at altitude might affect his data. ;)

I'm at sea level but run a few weeks of the year in the blue ridge mountains and still average 20 for the year.

Reverse is too high for backing uphill when cutting firewood. Wish it was like 1st. Reverse in 4Lo is like 1st in 2Hi.

It's love/hate. Spinning that much higher on the freeway means my MPG sucks over 70 but it's great to have in 1st on the trail.

What I want to know is whose idea it was to make it a double overdrive with the same 6th gear ratio as the prior 6MT but with a shorter final drive. I'd love to see something in the mid to low .6x range for cruising at 70+. and the .71 in 5th.

    Wrong. More salesman talk.

    Think about this.............

1/2 (maybe more) Tacoma owners don't really need a truck at all.

1/4 Tacoma owners could easily meet their 4wd/AWD on pavement snow needs, doggy park hauling, campground camping and HD mulch runs with a Ridgeline.

Of the remaining 1/4 there are lots who modify with 'level lifts' and big tires, but have no functional need for either. They make their own bed, so to speak.

Of the folks who actually do wheel more than a path you could bicycle on, need more ground clearance, and/or tow heavy, gears can be a real benefit.

    Summary.

Regearing is a niche market. It's a great (but pricey) solution for solving specific issues. And it should be considered if you have one of those issues.

That's just all IMHO of course. ;)

I'm struggling a little bit with the 14.5 mpgs.

I've got 63lb tires, drive a combination of highway and stupid traffic and get 17mpgs.

My trips through the mountains, we were getting in the 20s (with 40lb tires).

I'm not against the idea of re-gearing. It might really make things better, but I'm struggling what he's telling us.

The only time I get that terrible mileage is when we were driving highways speeds at a constant height escalation... Up the Llano Estacado.

I feel like you would have to purposely drive weird to get that low. Yesterday I was driving in city traffic with 300lbs in the bed and I still got 16 -17. And thats an MT with larger tires

Yeah, I'm with you on this as well. I'm on 315s with a bunch of extra weight, and the only time I see 13s-14s is stop and go on the interstate trip home, and I kind of drive like a dick cause I have a turndown and like my exhaust noise lol. I'm usually in the 15s

That’s what I figure. His video’s main argument is that Tacomas need regearing because of low mpgs, but I don’t see many Tacoma’s getting that low of mpg like what is shown in his video

That’s because he’s driving up hills, in winter, in high elevation, with bad winter gas. I think

Exactly. The regearing allows him to now stay in the proper gear allowing for better performance and mpg on the steeper grades of driving.
