I personally don't think much of the oiled style, I vote for plain old OEM or Wix.

There is no performance advantage to the boutique filters you mention.

In case that's why you were considering them.

My 2019 came with the TRD one and I remember back in the day with other vehicles buying filters that required cleaning and oiling....

It's probably my age and laziness level but when I think about spending money on the cleaning/oil kits plus my time to clean it/let it dry/re-oil, and then being worried about over oiling and ruining sensors.... I just prefer the standard OEM Toyota filter.

I took the TRD filter out and replaced it with the Toyota OEM paper that I bought online.

OEM are perfectly fine. They are pretty good, just like Toyota oil filters. You can pay more but do you even get more then OEM? Especially under warranty, I always use OEM filters, it's just something that takes any pushback from a dealer out of the equation if something happens. And when the prices are the same and often lower [oil filters] then there really isn't a downside.

If you want a performance filter you FIRST need a performance vehicle.

Be sure to watch the final test for the K&N filter. Eye opening.

From that video test if you are just a street mall crawler truck the K&N gives best performance. I don’t think you will be shoving mass amounts of dirt through your engine. Now if you are an avid off-road person then K&N is not your friend. I would stay stock or Wix. Either way stock or wix would be the best all around decision IMO.
I have ran a knock off style K&N cold air intake on my 2006 Scion XB from new. It has 188000 miles on it now with 0 problems but obviously it’s not an off-road vehicle but it has been on some dirty construction sites.

Stick with oem or a wix. I bought a trd K&N filter for my tundra. It fouled the mass air sensor a number of times. I think it probably was over oiled by the manufacture. I kept it in the truck for 50k miles or so, and went back to a wix. I never had that sensor foul again, plus the truck ran just as well. Imo, the k&n was waste of money.

According to the product description on multiple Toyota parts websites, the TRD air filter is "Dyno-tested to deliver an increase in both horsepower and torque".

So why are so many people saying it does NOTHING for performance? I get that it doesn't say how much increase, and it's probably minimal. But I doubt Toyota is going to completely lie about it.

This is a 2.5 year old thread you have resurrected. However, that is moot as my reading of some other threads on here say the TDR air filter has been recently discontinued by Toyota. IIRC
