Got a Viair 100% duty cycle compressor with a 2 1/2 gallon tank and a Viair 400P portable.
I got the big one with the tank, to mount on my Ram 3500, and the portable for the Tacoma. But now I’m thinking about swapping them. I pull a 5th wheel and several different trailers with my Ram, but rarely any trailers with my tacoma. I’m thinking portable may be better for trailer use, and tank may be better for trail use.
    Opinions???
If I installed the tank on the Tacoma....where would I put it? I have a Diamondback cover, but I don’t want it in the bed if I can help it. So frame mount?

If you're only using it to air-up tires, that tank is going to slow it down considerably (once exhausted, the compressor has to work to fill both the tank AND tires). With a 100% duty cycle compressor and good ventilation, I wouldn't run the tank (unless you foresee needing air with the truck off. Even then, you'll run through 2.5 gallons pretty fast). I run a York in our Jeep and originally used a one gallon tank mainly as a manifold; even it slowed down my air-up time.

The tank will be useless for anything other than filling up small shit.

for trail use I recommend the portable or onboard air. I run a viair 400p for now, but have an arb twin I’m working on hooking up with a 2.5 gal tank.

But with a tank that size, you could run an air horn!!

With your dual ARB and the tank, shouldn't you be able to run air tools?

Not very effectively. A cut-off tool will stall pretty bad with almost any OBA set-up.

probably, but I have no intentions of bringing air tools with me on the trails. If I need an impact I have an electric one. Probably use it for petty shit like blowing up floats at the beach, blowing sand out of a vag or two, etc etc.

correct. Most air tools have a higher cfm requirement than the arb twin outputs.

Anyone know how much faster an ARB twin is over the 400p? I'm just filling tires so not sure if its worth upgrading.

Keep the 400p if that’s all you are doing. I’ve enjoyed mine, but wanted to clear up some space in the cab, plus I’m putting in a front arb locker so I have a secondary need for the twin.

I agree with this. No reason to upgrade. That'll do the job for sure. I ran a cheap MV-50 compressor for several years, it's duty cycle sucked and 50% of the time I couldn't quite get my 4th tire aired completely up before it locked up... Your 400p is a huge step-up from that thing, so shouldn't have any issues.

Here's my current setup. Single ARB. The tank is prolly useless, but my buddy gave it to me for nothing (He prolly regretted that when he found out a few months later how expensive that ARB tank is, haha!)

What mount are you using here? Also is that a quick release valve system?

The mount is some random powdercoated plate/bracket my dad pulled outta a dumpster 15 years ago at the mill he worked at. Drilled a couple holes to match up with the threaded posts sticking up from the fender well and bend another piece of metal to make a spacer/leg to reach down to a lower threaded post. Definitely not much to look at, but it worked. Had the MV-50 on it before, without the tank.

And yeah, was just a quick release I found laying around. I have one of those springy-coil hoses in the storage under my rear drivers side seat that I use to air up my tires.
