FYI, physically the 95-00 and 01-04 tail lights are interchangeable.

However, IIRC there is a grounding difference between the two eras. Also if memory serves me right, you can swap the 01-04 tail lights to a 95-00 with just plug and play. But you cannot just swap a 95-00 to a 01-04 because of that grounding difference.

I'll have to look it all up when I get the time but I figured I'd just throw this out there to:

    1. Maybe have someone else chime in with concrete knowledge of it.
    2. Prevent someone from buying taillights that may not work. And have them investigate first.

    Edit: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/tail-light-interchange-questions.403188/

Post #7 mentions it... not forward compatible.

These ones look like they’re more clear not smoked like those others ones. Still cool though.

you could buy the clear ones and hit 'em with some VHT nightshades. Not sure how they'd look compared to the actual smoked ones but just a thought.

right, I was saying you could buy these clear ones ones: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08HLVB46T and VHT them and then they should be like these ones: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Black-Smok...oyota-Tacoma-Pickup-96-97-98-99-/402440110509

they looked like the same lights, just one is clear and one is smoked but after looking at them again, it looks like the smoked ones are black inside and the clear ones are chrome. I don't know if using the VHT would yield the same look.

VHT night shades is good stuff but it does fade unless you use a UV resistant clear coat - not rustoleum x2 or anything. I did that and it faded in 2 years back to original color.
