Aftermarket Class IV Hitch Receiver???

    Okay, I have looked all over the 'net without luck, including reading maverick491's excellent posts about towing.

    I'm looking for a Class IV (not a class III/IV) receiver hitch for my 2010 Tacoma SR5 V6 Dbl Cab.

    As with other posts, it obviously exists due to it being available on the TRD Towing model.

    Is there anywhere to buy an after market one?? If not, can I get one through the dealer that is rated to 6000 lbs + to fit my truck?

    If, IF, you believe the dealership I spoke to when I bought my 2012 SR5 4X4 DC, the answer was no.
    They had an SR5 without the factory tow package and I asked about adding on an aftermarket or even dealer installed OEM tow package to get the full 6500 tow capacity that the factory tow package has. They said it wasn't doable; in addition to the mechanical extra's the (larger battery, transmission cooler, ect) the frame and tow hitch are reinforced and that can't be added at the dealership level.
    Is it doable, somehow and someway I'm sure it could be, it just maybe more work than an aftermarket bolt on.

    I bought the Valley hitch from Amazon when I bought my truck. It's listed as "Class III" on the website, but the hitch itself is marked as "Class IV". It is rated for 5,000 pounds regular towing, 5,500 pounds with a weight-distributing hitch.

    I don't know if that's close enough for you.

    What that doesn't have is the rest of the trailer tow package, with the ready-to-go- trailer brake controller pigtail, engine oil cooler, larger battery and alternator.

    You CAN purchase the parts to put the factory tow package hitch on the back. It includes the modified bumper frame members that bolt on in place of the stock non-tow frame members. Perhaps a salvage yard would be able to find the relevant pieces for you...just make sure to grab everything (bolts and other hardware) related to the hitch.

    Yet another instance in which the dealership is incorrect. The OEM receiver can be mounted to a similar Tacoma that did not come with the factory tow package. There is no difference in the frames as far as I'm aware but regardless, the mounting points are the same.

    They are correct about the other items that come with the tow package such as a larger alternator, auxillary oil cooler and transmission cooler (autos).

    OP, the only class IV receiver you will find to fit the Tacoma is the OEM one. Aftermarket, you're looking at class III (which is more than your non-tow package truck is rated to tow anyways). I would not tow upwards of 6,000 lbs with a non-tow package equipped truck unless additional steps were taken to protect the engine and transmission.

    Exactly so. OEM hitch bolted up to my SR5 with no problem whatsoever. Captive nuts for the extra brakets are there already.

    If you're determined to get a class IV, used ones come up for sale in the BST section pretty regularly. Got mine on here for about what a decent aftermarket one costs.

    Thanks for all the information. Ultimately I'm going to have the dealer check it out next time I am in - the hitch receiver that is on it now is factory, sticker on it says 5000 lbs / 500 lb hitch weight, and I am getting a weight distributing hitch on my RV which will help. If they can get me a straight class IV at the dealer I'll make the switch, otherwise I'll stick with the one I have which I think is Class III/IV combo.

    The RV I will be towing is 3400 lbs dry, so I figure 4400 lbs loaded, I am still under the 5000 lbs. I'm getting the electronic brake control and a transmission cooler installed soon.......... I will let you know how it goes!

    Thanks again, I just found this forum and find it a wealth of information and knowledge.

    Anyone know if my 2010 Tundra's brake controller will fit a Gen-2 (2013) Tacoma? Are the pigtails the same?

    If you are going to be towing with an auto, add a good aftermarket tranny cooler as it is cheap insurance.
