I have a 2019 Tacoma with an alpine ilx-507 head unit installed. After I updated my phone to iOS 18 it not longer reads text messages on the head unit. I did the usual turn the phone on and off, the head unit on and off, looked for the message section to see if the read option got turned off and checked Siri, but those all seem fine. I also disconnected the iPhone and re paired it with the head unit and that didn’t work. Has anyone else had any issues or a way to fix this I might have missed?

This has been and will always be an issue with phones and head units. The head unit software no longer talks the same to the phone software.

check the alpine site to see if they have any firmware updates, but have very low expectations. Also keep checking over the next several months since ios18 is just now public. But again, don’t expect anything.

Thanks for the info, even though it’s very disappointing.

Yeah it’s not ideal. At the end of the day, they are radio manufacturers and not software developers. You’d think they could have a few people on staff to make sure the software stays relevant. But in their defense, 90+ percent of people are dumb and would brick the radio in the update process. On top of that, the CPU’s these radios are already BARELY powerful enough to run the radio as it came from the factory, and each software update typically requires more processing power than the last. So I’m betting after a simple update, the radio might show decreased response times and feel more sluggish.

with all that being said, I’m not a software developer or engineer so I’m just rambling with my thoughts ‍♂️

I have the same head unit and iOS 18, and my car play still reads text messages. Believe firmware is version 6?

The latest version on Alpine site I could find is 5.0.001, you might check for an OTA update if you haven't already

Any Mods? One. Maybe two, tops...
@Shorts McFadden is right on the money. Check the version of your firmware. If your unit is older than a couple of months, you definitely have the 5.X version. Just do what he suggested, at home within your WiFi range do an over the air firmware update to 6.X.

That will definitely fix your issue. I just installed mine and it came with the 6.X newest firmware version and I also did the iOS update to 18. ZERO issues, my girl Siri reads all my texts.
