After shipping and powder coating, a high clearance rear bumper with tow hitch and swing arm with wheel & jerry can mount is like $3,000+ (CBI offroad)

Is that just what they cost, or is there a more affordable option I'm overlooking?

I have seen Weld together kits but never looked real close

If you found some one Local it most likely would be in that price range

Fair enough. What I'm looking for is a bumper that doesn't cost 1/3rd of the price I paid for the entire truck. See what I'm getting at when I say affordable? If I bought a $25k truck, then sure a $3k bumper sounds reasonable. But I bought a 20 year old truck for $10k, so $3k is a lot of money for one bumper.

I understand it takes skill and time to create these things, no disrespect meant. $1000-$1500 sounds more reasonable to me. Maybe this is why a lot of shops aren't doing 1st gen stuff anymore.

Bumper prices are for sure getting out of hand. People seem to pay it, though.

That said, spend $500-$600 of a welder, and a DIY kit, and you'll be well ahead of the game.

Even after I just spend a grand on *another* welder, I've still spent less on my bumper, skid plates, and rock sliders and if I would have bought off the shelf ones.

    Sliders:

    CBI DIY bumper:

    Skid plate (work in progress):

For a rear bumper, there are several options for DIY "kits" (for example: http://nwtrailinnovations.com/bumpe...97-1998-1999-2000-2001-2002-2003-2004-bumpers)

and these look to be fairly easy to modify with something like:

@MamaTried81 have you considered going custom?

    Or better yet, a tiregate?

@GHOST SHIP just made one for another member on here, that closely resembles the one Wilco Off-Road made years back; he made some improvements as far as mounting and rigidity goes.

The market follows demand. Every year there are fewer 1st gen on the road, every year the demand for aftermarket decreases. I wouldn't spend 3k on a bumper either. Ifi changed rears I probably wouldn't do a swing out or a can holder either. They're more usable on an suv than a truck usually.

    Anyway 4xinnovations has cheaper options.

    Great posts above

But here are some more just in case

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=om8EOkbVX1Q
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X5eQKieDiMU this one is not how to build one, but it gives good ideas

As far as finding one, keep checking the Market place here and craigs list and offer up.

It cost the same R&D to build for a first gen as a second or 3rd without infringing on someone else's design.

Seems like every body that tries to make or design something for fist gen trucks gets attacked. So with that in mind there will be even fewer and fewer builders working for us.

I wonder maybe more of the first generation crowd build there own stuff.

After all some of us have life time guarantee frames so bumpers are easy

Unless your in a area with lots of local demand Shipping Bumpers gets expensive

So that second video (tire carrier build) is this a ok way of doing a swing out? It seems like it might not be strong enough having that spindle just welded to the bumper? It seems like a cheap and easy way to do it but I’m hesitant on the strength. I’m planning a rear bumper swing mount build now so that’s why I’m curious.

Yeah I don't like that one either. History of failing.
The one with the white 4 runner is nicely done. Very strong.
