Advice on removing the oil filter cap.

Anyone have tips for removing the oil filter cap. went and grabbed the tool from auto zone and it broke my cap.

in a bind trying to change the filter before work tomorrow.

 

Big pipe wrench?
Possibly a big crescent wrench?

 

could try a strap wrench. or a wide-jawed pipe wrench if using things nearby.

the bottom of the canister is a hex, auto parts stores will carry the socket adapter for that.

i use this nicer motivx version myself because life is too short of cheap tools.

You need a long driver/pry bar and have someone tap an edge while putting pressure on it with the filter tool.

 

Take the round plug off using a 1/4 extension first.

Then use the housing filter wrench to remove the housing.

I had to use a cheater metal hollow pipe (2ft) to get some leverage.

Use slight torque and Lefty-Lucy it.

Do you have a brand new cap to replace that one with once you take it off? If not, I wouldn't remove it. Just refill the oil and order a new cap, a proper removal tool, and try again once they arrive.

 

thank you for the replies. i have resigned to driving the f250. and already moved my gear over. i think i just need to figure out my filter size and get one of the filters like soundman98 mentioned

 

The silver cap can be removed with (as I recall best) a 3/8 in breaker bar, but just use the square part. A 2 ft breaker bar should allow hammering on the end of the bar which will overpower resistance on the cap.

After that the Motivx cap/wrench does a good job, and that Motivx has the same 3/8 in square head for the breaker bar. Less actual force that can break it loose slowly and carefully.

 

I use the motive adapter, but with a socket. I managed to strip one of the motive tools using just an extension in the square hole.

You might see if autozone has an oil filter wrench with rubber straps like this...

Like others have said buy a new cap. When you put the new one one make sure you torque to the correct spec and you should be ok going forward . The motive wrench is a good product.
The Baxter conversion is great but I never did it because of warranty . I don’t like to open a chance of any ways to say something is my fault

 

i dunno, i've done 2 oil changes to my truck, the first time, i blamed whoever changed it before. the second time, i know without a doubt that i torqued it snug, but never tight, and it was just as much of a bear to get off.

it's just the nature of the beast, er, oil filter cap.

 

I explained the same thing in my most recent oil change.

That's why I don't believe the housing should be over torqued...the vacuum of the engine block seems to create that tightness.

At least, that's my uneducated guess as to why it felt so difficult to remove the oil filter housing.

 

Consider swapping for the alum housing,

15620-31060; you may have to swap center tubes. It was a direct replacement on our 2018 Lexus model with the same engine.
To get the composite housing off, maybe try a different tool. I use the socket type that goes on the end of the housing, tool CTA 2485, the 64mm version.

 

Also putting a nice coat of oil inside where the filters housing goes into on that flat area helps

 

Get a decent housing filter wrench and put in on correctly to match the slots on the plastic housing.

Then, install the aluminum housing unit.



The plastic one has more wing flanges to align.



This is what I put on and it works like a charm.

I have a 2022 Tacoma TRD, i tried to buy this on Amazon and its stating it doesn't fit my Tacoma, is amazon wrong?

 

so motiv socket came in today. couldnt get it off with regular wretch or the cordless impact. even the corded impact ugga dugga'd for a while before finally backing it off. moral of the story stay well fuckin clear of landers toyota in Little rock.

 

Yep seems some dealers like to go crazy. I had the same issue the first time I changed the oil in my 2017. A breaker bar eventually got it off and I switched the the aluminum housing.

 

Aluminum housing and proper torque specs are the way to go.
