Just had my 2013 Tacoma 4x4 6-cylinder access cab rear brake shoes replaced. When testing out the emergency brake pedal, I get tension when pressing the pedal just before the pedal reaches the floorboard. Does the pedal self-adjust as the shoes wear down? I ask because if they don't then as they do wear, I'm concerned I'll have no tension at all eventually. I had my Toyota dealer replace the shoes but if they charge me more money to check it out, I want to adjust this myself. Is there a video on how to do this? I am familiar with this process, but it's been many years since I adjusted brakes.

same way as you remmeber on the older cars, heres a video to help. BUT. if the dealer did the brakes, take it back and make them adjust it properly, if I paid their prices for brakes, Id make them properly adjust them, but thats just me being me...

It's fairly common for new shoes to wear in and need re-adjusting.

The shoes and drums need to conform, and as you drive they create more clearance and less force.

When I do shoes professionally. I go way too tight, then drive to seat them in.

They should 100% adjust these for you.

The dealer did a good job with the brake shoe replacement and the brakes themselves seem fine. They did do a readjustment since the shoes were dragging a little too much. They are working normally. But isn't there a different adjustment for the emergency brake pedal? I don't think I should be pressing this pedal just about to the floorboard before I get some tension.

I’ll bet the rr parking brake cable is broken

If the dealer readjusted and the parking brake is still way down on the floor then there is a cable adjustment under the center console storage box as they do stretch over time. Unbolt and pull out the box (2 bolts under the fake floor/insulation pad and you will see where to tighten the nut/rod that goes back to both rear brake cables. Using the rear parking brake is how they are adjusted out under normal operations (not by backing up).
Here is the diagram so you can see what's happening back there.

Not clear on what you mean when you say "Using the rear parking brake is how they are adjusted out under normal operations (not by backing up)".

I believe the is an adjustment for the pedal under the center console.

Yes adjustment under the center console 2gen and yes when you step on the parking brake the cable pulls the reaction lever that clicks the star (moves the automatic adjuster lever) and it expands the adjusting bolt which makes the shoes get closer to the drums. Yes it is all hooked together. Follow that parking brake cable attachment in the rear brakes and how it pivots and moves the lever. There are several points/pivots that need to be greased as they can get frozen such as the parking brake shoe strut lower lever. Notice in the diagram post #7 everything that moves and pivots has "parking brake" in the description label. Hope that helps.
