My 2020 OR came with the tech package but not dynamic navigation. Is it possible to have a Toyota dealership install it? If so, has anyone done it and how much did the dealership charge?

    Hey man,

I'm actually going through that right now. I love apple car play but I don't have service all the time in the mountains and I don't have unlimited data. I was hoping to purchase an OEM or use a 3rd party GPS antenna and hook into the back of the Head Unit. From what I understand, the hook ins should be available on many of them but the ability to use internal navigation depends on which Etune you have: plus vs premium.

The antenna itself doesn't need to be in the shark fin but could be behind the Head unit just under the dashboard. I asked my cousin who is a Toyota dealer and he was not sure at all. I may just call the parts department at another toyota and see if they know. If not, I'm just gonna take a risk on the 3rd party antenna from Amazon. I'll return it if it doesn't work out.

This thread has a similar request: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/gps-antenna-installation-for-tacoma-2020-sr5-double-cab.657820/

This thread has a reference for using third party by removing a clip: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/13-gps-satellite-antenna-for-factory-navigation.577220/

One last thread that has a lot of good information: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/help-with-gps-antenna-please-2015-entune-plus.397990/

I'm planning on taking the Head unit off to determine which connections I need and then make the buy on amazon for third party since OEM stuff is way overpriced. I also need to check which etune I have since without the software, there is no point in adding the antenna.

Wouldn't it be cheaper to just get more data?

    Otherwise, just install google maps.

Google maps can save all the navigation to your SD card while you are on WIFI so it doesn't need to use online data.

I don't know why Apple navigation doesn't have this feature, but maybe its part of that costs more does less thing.

Why anyone would want to buy a factory or aftermarket navigation that will be instantly obsolete and will cost a fortune for updated maps if you ever get the option to upgrade is a complete mystery to me.

You can also get waze or maps.me if you want offline navigation options. Even a $25 Amazon tablet with maps.me would be a better investment than installing a navigation system.

I used maps.me when I was backpacking and the foreign governments blocked access to google maps. It works well and is free.

I have both apple maps and google maps. I like the way apple maps integrates better to apple car play. I spend a lot of times in the mountains where I don't have service so more data wouldn't help. You are correct more data is cheaper than an integrated system but I think I have the finances in order to buy a 13$ gps antenna and return it if it doesn't work. I'm just trying my best here!

Offline maps. I save them locally to my device. Not sure if you can save them to storage on head unit, but that would be really nice if possible.

Head unit is just a dumb screen. You should be able to save everything to your $1000 phone.

On Google maps you can just download the entire map area you're going to be in before you leave. You can than still use maps like normal without data.

Google maps does not display certain fire roads or OHV roads near me. One time I was stuck in the middle of the woods trying to get access to the highway and google maps said I was in the middle of a green space. Only help was a compass knowing I had to go north west.

I'd rather get the overlander GPS or save more detailed maps to my phone.

I use the trail trekker app for my snowmobile and atv maps. It's really detailed, maps are downloaded so no service required and it's like two bucks.

This is where GAIA GPS on a tablet is a lifesaver. Has a lot of the OHV roads google maps doesnt have, but also has street maps. Download the area on topo+road overlay and also a sat map and you're golden.

What exactly is Dynamic Navigation? My truck has it but I honestly don't know what it is. I just assumed it was some BS subscription service that's best ignored.

Don’t waste your money! Navigation on the Toyota is one of the worst I’ve seen. You can’t use it while moving except for voice searching and it is more misses than hits. Once you do get your navigation set, you’ll have no confidence in the directions they give you and don’t dare miss a turn because you know the route better, it will just cycle back and try to make a do a U turn, even if you’re miles away from the turn you went off their course. Don’t hit the zoom out button more than twice, you lose all of your side streets. You get to watch a blue line on your screen and maybe a mile ahead. It just sucks!

Just basic navigation. It’s updated to the most current maps downloaded from the cloud.

Then plug in your old phone that you left in a drawer somewhere and setup a tile to launch wifi on your existing phone to share with the old phone/tablet when you get in the truck.

I use GAIA GPS and it's compatible with carplay. I think the pro version is like $40/year and you can save all sorts of offline maps: (land-ownership, topo, forest service visitor maps, offroad/overland maps, etc). I used it for both search and rescue and for wildland fire.

You can also create custom routes and download other folks .GPX files and import those into GAIA.
