They're all pretty similar, and Home Depot/Lowes. Any differences will be minimal and offset by drivetime/selection.

edit: Amazon is almost always more expensive for hardware for questionable quality. If you want to buy online, use mcmaster-carr.

In my experience it really depends. The last place I lived did 8.8 metric HW by weight, same as SAE. I saved a fortune there.

    wanna be mods
I've found Taylor's tend to offer the JIS equivalents for nearly the same cost as standard or the alternatives...that said, I do have access to my neighbor and FiL's spare parts shelves/storage containers...which is THE CHEAPEST, since it's only a half hour drive to the FiL's...the neighbor's a quick walk across the property and shared road.

I have found that as far as selection/availability of specific hardware, HD and Lowes don't seem to have as wide a selection for those specialty items I've had to grab for the Taco, or mods for the Taco.

For general use hex/lag/carriage bolts, nuts & washers, self-tapping & sheet metal screws, etc., the local farm supply stores sell it by the pound. Some have both SAE & metric in grades 2, 5 & 8. As expected, the unique & specialized stuff is in the drawers, sold by the piece.

A local independent tool store (shameless plug for Waltco Tool! ) has all that and a larger selection in the specialized stuff. The local ACE not too shaby either.

I find Ace to be a bit more expensive than the giant orange store, but it's a) walking distance to my house and b) infinitely more fun.

    Ace is my place.

Yes I know Ace is generally more expensive just had not really been to True value but looks like they carry the same Hillman hardware that Ace generally does i have not checked exact prices but i think they are comparable.

I have both ACE and Truevalue stores in my area. I use the Truevalue store for nuts and bolts both because they have a better selection and better price. Plus, it's owned by town residents so I'm supporting a local business. I hate to see a hardware store go out of business and be left with nothing but HD and Lowes.

Ace or True Value when I can, just because usually they’re a family owned franchise. Try to support the little guy as much as possible.

If you have a Rural King in your town, they are by far the cheapest.
    Grades 3, 5, 8, 8.8, 10.9

    Buy them by the lbs.

Pretty much. But they offer more stuff.
Food, drinks, firearms, and their own line of tractors and equipment.

Remains to be seen I bought the tires and wheels the rest came along
It will come down to the local area and your local demand.

It also comes down to if the Ace or True value stories are company owned they can dump product at a lower cost while propped up by the company.

For the longest time my Toyota dealer with my discount was the cheapest source of JIS bolts in the local area.

Yep, area dependent. I will usually hit a local fastener supply house for various metric things if I can get there during regular business hours.

Here’s the deal, unless you are buying specialized fasteners or large quantities just go to the closest most convenient place. Running around to various places to try to save a little bit is not cost effective nor time effective.

Yeah (closer to me) I use ace or true value if I’m looking for a specific unusual part needed but big box store if I’m out & it’s a more simple thing I need
