Accidently shifted in to neutral while driving.

Hi, I was driving my friend around and he thought that the shifter had some sort of button. Because of this he accidentally shifted it in to neutral for a very brief second. He doesn't know if it went fully in to neutral but the image of the shifter came up on the dash. I was wondering if this could cause damage.

Shift back to drive and keep on with life this is not a problem.

 

Going into N is fine. My dog has bumped it into N a few times. You can even go into reverse and it just turns on the camera (so I've seen a video on and read about - I don't dare try it myself lol).

 

its designed to be able to shift into neutral while driving so I think you're fine

 

That’s what the rev limiter is for, not going to hurt a thing

It basically puts you into neutral. I just coasted into the breakdown lane, stopped, bumped it into drive and drove off feeling like the dumbest man in the universe.

If it happens again just release the gas pedal and put it back in gear , then hammer down .

 

There have been people that have shifted into reverse while driving 55 here to turn the backup cam on !!!

 

Yup , you are fine .
We actually drop into Neutral at highway speeds when diagnosing driveline vibrations .
Its a common practice in many transmission shops

I heard about that one too. I didn’t have any impulse to try it either so I got an anytime backup camera harness and wired it to @MESO ’s other shifter switch.

 

I've seen automatics literally explode sending shrapnel thru the floorboard . Transmission components such as sprags , planetaries and clutch drums turn insane rpm upwards of 20k rpm and will destroy a Transmission if thrown in neutral

 

I've seen numerous automatics explode at the dragstrip at the finish line after drivers put the shifter into neutral

I do this to my wife when she’s just about to go after the light turns green or trying to pull out of a parking lot. Drives her absolutely crazy. She doesn’t let me drive with her often anymore she normally makes me drive.
