Doesn't seem to be a thread for this which is totally understandable, so here's a new one...

I've got a life changing event coming in soon. Going to be taking care of my mother with MS who cannot walk or stand and is on the heavier side and needs to be transferred with a lift and I really don't want to trade in my dream truck for a Sienna... Was hoping someone here might be able to point me in the direction of some aftermarket manufactures who may offer passenger side power swivel seats that would make it feasible to transfer her into the truck. All search queries are dead ends so far.

Basically i'm looking for something like This but this one doesn't list any Tacomas in their supported vehicles...

Just got my truck last year and am in love with it. Would hate to see it go.

Thanks Chew. Her and my Dad spent 34 years taking care of me. No brainer.

Did you call the company you linked and asked if the custom make them for Tacos?

I did, waiting for a call back from them but figured I'd ask here as well. Didn't want to get stuck in a Henry Ford Model T scenario lol... That was literally the only thing I could find online. Totally open to a custom job.

You really need a separate vehicle for momma, one that is set up for her situation. And depending on how often she needs to go out, it might be more cost effective to just hire an accessibility transport van when needed.

Good luck brother, I was there once too.

Small lift, slightly oversized tires, well...
I can't see why that couldn't be adapted to a Taco. Seeing the price, my biggest question is how it gets paid for, and that cost likely can't be recouped down the road. Good luck, if you're lucky it will work out.

Well the theory is it's gonna cost less than a wheelchair van. Thanks guys maybe someone has some ideas at some point but appreciate the feedback. Was really looking for anyone who might know of a company here that does custom stuff or has been in a similar situation. Bet she'd love to do some off roading ya know. Quality of life matters too.

Have you checked with her medical insurance at all. It's possible that they may cover some or all of the cost for any medical/accessibility items that she needs. One thing to keep in mind is do not take a no answer as the gospel when you call them. When my wife had a medical issues a few years ago we quickly found out that if you advocate for yourself and ask for supervisors, even a supervisors supervisor, you get different and sometimes better answers. Good luck and kudos to you for taking care of Mom.

Something I plan to look into once she's in my care for good. Haven't had the chance to check yet but there are grants and funding available through the ADA for stuff like this. Have some lures in the pond on that currently for the power seat if I can find one that will work. Just looking for an interim solution to bring them back up from Florida in a couple months.

Was going to mention looking for any and all funding possible, lots of grants and other things out there!

If that company or another like it will sell you the mechanism I’d be happy to help any way I can retrofitting it from afar, be it design or consult.

The minimum door opening as well as door fully open angle will be a big factor for something like that, maybe we could find you some custom hinges.

Feel free to DM me your location details if you’re interested I’d be more than happy to ask around see if anyone local to you could do some fab for ya as well! Pretty cool what communities can do for each other if ya ask around enough!

I’d do anything for my mom, glad to see you being there for yours!

EDIT: another option may be a chair that will saddle up next to your truck as close as possible and has a lift function. We’ve used chairs like that to transfer kids onto horses (on a ramp, they don’t go THAT high).

And talk to her Occupational Therapist specifically. My wife is an OT and their entire job is 100% how to make transfers and day to day life things like this work. They can be super creative and smart with solutions (as well as the ability to bill the solution medically rather than to your pocket).

Just looked at the weight of one of them chairs-with 150kg the lightest, you are not getting far with the 450kg payload the Tacoma offers. Buck may be right with having a designated vehicle for your mom.
