Took the truck out for a drive today and noticed the ac was off, So I turned it on and it turned itself off again :( Every time I turn it on, it turns itself off again.

Ive done a bunch of searching, and not much comes up except this video that shows my exact problem. He is saying that there is a plug behind the glovebox for the "mag clutch rotation sensor". This does make some sense because I was doing changes for my wiring to my mids in the dash.

So, does anyone know where the "mag clutch rotation sensor" plug is? or what it looks like, or maybe some color codes on the wires? Id love to just fix this myself rather than let toyota fumble through it and then in the end blame me and charge me.

This is not my video, but my truck does the same thing.

    And now its working again....

I took apart the passenger side of the dash, wiggled everything, still wouldnt turn on. Went and got gas and a car wash, wasnt working for about a mile after getting gas, then I turned it on and it stayed on. Guess its probably not something I did. Im going to keep an eye on it and if it starts acting up again I guess its dealer time.

Mag clutch rotation sensor sounds like it would be on AC clutch on the compressor. Maybe unplug it and see if its corroded.

Yeah, I think there are 2 plugs for it, one under the dash where it connects to the control module and one where it plugs into the compressor. Guessing the one on the compressor side has the issue seeing as how it started working again after gas and car wash... perhaps water dripped into the plug and completed the connection. Guess ill find out in the morning when I can get under there with some daylight.

I think what you're after is the "A/C lock sensor".
From the mag clutch it goes to connector IH1 and then to connector A14 at the A/C amplifier.
I tried finding that connector(IH1) for you in the wiring diagrams; no luck.

The mag clutch in some applications can come out of adjustment. If you're very careful you can tap the clutch when it's off and it will engage. If it does, it needs adjustment if it's adjustable. It's a mechanical movement so try it to isolate the problem. BE CAREFUL..TAP LIGHTLY. LOL

Like tap on it when the engine is running or engine is off, tap, then turn on engine?

What I find weird is that the time it stays on is not the same each time, it usually shuts off the second cold air starts to blow. I read there is a "ice" sensor for the system that shuts off the system.

No while its running, turn on A/C on and if the compressor is not running, tap the clutch. Don't get close to the belt. Tap it lightly. It moves in and out to engage the compressor. A magnet "sucks" the clutch into the compressor to pump the R134 (freon).

Yeah could be a high/low pressure switch, or a relay going bad or any number of things. Is this a digital climate control system? Never mind on the digital, just saw the knobs..lol

Mine did the same thing a year or so ago but it was under warranty at the time. It was the AC clutch.

And now it’s working again... I’m car ac certified, but that’s on cars from 15 years ago.... this is over my head. I’m going back to my 1990 and older cars.

This is the newest car I’ve worked on, prior to that the newest was 2008

I think I’ve narrowed it down to the ac compressor, I had sprayed it with the hose this morning, it didn’t work for a bit, but now is working. The only pattern I am seeing is getting the compressor wet makes it work after a little bit of sitting.

Hope it is not working when you get to the local shop. If it is working, they will just say can't duplicate the problem.

Could be, but its odd that by getting the ac compressor wet it works.
