I recently acquired a 1998 Toyota Tacoma. The AC and heat worked but the pushbutton switch on the dash was broken out so I’m guessing it was stuck in the AC on position. After watching a few videos it seemed like a pretty simple pull out plug-in repair. When I put the new switch in it started blowing 10 amp AC fuses under the hood as quick as I could put them in I can’t see any skinned wires any ideas from anyone. Could the cheap switch I bought be the problem?

The AC worked before you replaced the switch??Explain the AC switch broken out?

Compressor pulled in and Things Got Cold with the Blower Motor on?

The only thing you changed was a new switch?? Now the AC fuse opens ?

The switch was still in but the button was broken off. LED stayed on in switch and AC worked but couldn’t be turned off. After changing to cheap new switch the 10 amp fuse for AC under the hood blew.
Yes the compressor kicked in and it got cold just could not turn it off.

I had a similar problem but i wasnt popping fuses... I ended up buying the whole module in there that controls the temp, vents and fan. I bought it used for $60 and it saved me all the frustrations. if you do buy another save your old bulbs incase the new module later blows a bulb. Dealer wants 16+ a piece for them.

    Good Luck

Old thread, but same exact thing happened with my new $9 A/C switch from Amazon. AVOID. 10A fuse keeps popping. I assume bad switch, because my old switch was fine even though to use it you had to insert the broken off button into it.

Guess I learned my lesson with cheap Chinese sh*t. Anyone have any other recommendations before I order the OEM switch for $50?

What did you end up doing? I replaced my AC switch but couldn't get the new one to work. So i put my old one back in, could at least turn it on using a screw driver. Now it won't work. Frustrated is not the word.

You blew the fuse. This is exactly what happened to me. IIRC it is a 10 amp fuse located in the fuse box on the driver side of the engine bay. Very cheap from auto parts stores. There will be a diagram on the lid of the fuse box you can use to figure out which one is for the AC.

The chinese AC switches from Amazon are clearly no good. I replaced the fuse and have yet to order the correct switch from Toyota, I have been lazy and put the broken one back in which still works (but the button falls out occasionally)

Thank you for the reply. I'll definitely check the fuse tomorrow and hopefully that is what it is. I'm no mechanic for sure!
