my ac compressor gave me trouble when I first bought my truck a year ago (it made a really loud screaming sound when I would engage it)I replaced the idler pulley and the belt no more noise an the AC would freeze you out .. Today I got home from work and could smell something like your brakes got hot ... Check brakes popped the hook checked all electric wires nothing went out a couple hours later to go fishing cranked the truck up started smoking and screaming loud I shut it down looked my compressor locked up and the crank was burning the belt up I took the belt off ... And ran it with no problems will it be alright to drive with out that belt for a while and has anyone replaced the compressor and have some advice for me to do it on a budget

You can replace the compressor yourself. I'm not sure of anyway to save money here other than find the cheapest one. You'd want to replace the receiver/dryer at the same time. Then take it to a shop and have them vacuum the system and fill it with freon. Before doing any work yourself, explain to the shop what you are doing and ask if you should add any oil to the compressor and if so how much and what type. Later, when you take it in let them know how much oil you put in (if any) so they know if they need to add oil or not.

The compressor definitely takes a bit of oil on the 2.7s. You have to pour it in before you hook it up. I found the amount needed in the service manual. I replaced my compressor with one from a junkyard. It does sound like the clutch in your compressor is shot, so you will need to replace the whole unit.

It's fine to run it without the AC belt on there until you can get it fixed.

The bearing in my AC clutch went out and melted the clutch. I ended up replacing just the clutch with the compressor in the vehicle. This allowed me to do the job for about $70 (cost of the clutch) and not have to drain the refrigerant. It was not an easy task and required many different snap ring pliers and a mirror to see what I was doing.

    This.
Might be a good time to flush the system of all the old oil and replace with new.

The AC is one of those " do it right the first time" type things or you will spend a shit-ton of money getting it right.
