Twist the temp knob back and forth about 40 times. Some times the potentiometer gets dirty.

How did you remove the blend door actuator? Mine is making noise but stops off after about 5-10 seconds. I'd like to remove it to see if it's dirty or needs cleaning before I order a new one. I search on youtube but couldn't find a removal video.

On my 04 it’s under the glove compartment by where the passenger rest their feet I think it’s like three Phillip screws , use a shorty Philipps screwdriver, I’ve fixed mine since my original post , I removed it it and carefully dissambled it cleaned it and added some silicone grease on the little hand that rotated the gears inside and it’s been working since

Thanks I know where it is but dang trying to remove is seems near impossible. I can remove the front screw but can't get to the others. I'll see if an angled phillip works!

I'm having the same issue with mine sticking and not going all the way back to cold. I had enough the other day as it was around 90 deg outside. I pulled over and popped the hood. The cable that connects to the heater control valve was only half way its travel. I simply grabbed the cable and closed the heater control valve all the way. A/C worked fine after that. Is this cable hooked to the same actuator, or is it a different one?

My 01 has been doing this for a couple years and I’ve just lived with it... but I’m fairly certain the fault is in the control head, not the actuator itself. If it’s moving back and forth, grab the knob and push in on it, if it changes the movement of the actuator, it’s a failing control head.

Where is this cable and the heater control valve? I unplugged the harness down by the actuator and everything is still good so far, but will all this talk and new info I'm more curious than ever to take this piece out before I order a new one.

The heater control valve is mounted to the center of the firewall underneath the hood. It turns coolant flow on and off to your heater core, so it’s plumbed into one of the heater core hoses. On the older trucks, the cable was hooked directly to the temp control knob. I’m not sure what exactly moves this cable in our case. I’ve not had time to look into it yet.

Ok, thread resurrection time! I finally got around to working on my blend door actuator. Does anyone recall how tight the linkage should be that it connects to? Mine seems pretty stiff. Also I’ve had a noise in the blower motor for some time. This is what 250k miles looks like on an evaporator core. Got it cleaned up like new finally. I thought the junk in the blower wheel was causing an imbalance, and vibration. Still did it when I removed the trash. Blower motor time as well. I didn’t replace the evaporator because it’s so easy to remove, nothing like the fords that I’m used to.

It was weird, it all mostly felt like fiberglass insulation. 99% of it pulled right off. Most of the time I’ve dealt with evaporators being plugged, it was like concrete. I would have replaced mine if it didn’t clean up so easily, and it’s easy to access.

I agree, but there were no bones at all. Just the fluffy stuff. My truck hasn’t ever had a smell that I’m aware of anyway. Everyone I work with has had the flu except me so far in the last month. I showed them this picture this morning and said it had to of built my immune system up!

Update: my truck is now fixed and the actuator was not the problem, but it had the same symptom of this thread. It would work sometimes, and not others. My actuator was moving back and forth no problem, out of the vehicle. I took it apart and cleaned it like this thread explaines to do. Turns out my problem was in all the linkage underneath the heater box. I lubed all of the hinges and the cable, and worked the linkage back and forth until it freed up. Maybe just a band aid for now, but here in NC, it’s heat in the am and a/c in the pm. Sometimes it’s opposite of that this time of year. Time will tell.
