While doing my wheel bearing change on the front i removed the abs sensor but I'm not sure what I removed is supposed to come apart. Is the sensor a two part component where part of it stays with the spindle? The part I took off has two prongs that push into the part inside the spindle assy. Did I break it apart where I shouldn't have? This is on a 2005. thanks

I think I found my answer by looking up the part description. I did break it. Are these things created equal or are there the type of part that you should get from Toyota or are aftermarket ones good enough? Thanks

Yes, you broke it. It’s very common for them to break when you attempt to remove them. Rust builds up outside of the rubber O ring on the sensor and when you try to remove it, the O ring won’t go past the rust. For the future, it’s not necessary to remove the sensor to replace the wheel bearing. When I did mine, I took everything apart, glass bead blasted the knuckles and painted them. The ABS sensors from Toyota are $200 each. There are cheap sensors on ebay for about $25/pair with free shipping from China. I chose to get the $90 each Beck Arnley sensors from Rockauto. Beck Arnley is a very respected brand.

Did they work ok and fit in the same hole without issue? Was the wire connector the same? Thanks so much for the feedback.

Yes, they fit and work perfectly. Just so you know, there’s left and right sensors. The left front and left rear are the same. The right front and right rear are the same.

With hub assembly out, it’s much easier to drill the broken part out.
I’m still debating on whether I’m going to pull my sensor the next I do wheel bearings.
I honestly don’t remember how much clearance there is in the knuckle?
I didn’t pay any attention when I did them the last time.

@Muddinfun You figure there is plenty of clearance as long as you go easy?
I’m really nervous about breaking mine. When I did mine 4 or 5 years ago
I pulled them and hammered on hub. So I wasn’t too worried then.

The sensor reads the seal looking part of the bearing. There are magnetic “poles” imbedded in the rubber. So, the bearing never goes in as far as the sensor. I’m not sure if the CV can be pulled outward far enough to contact the sensor, but you should be pushing the CV inward before you pull the bearing anyway.

Yeah, I did tap the CV inward to break it free from the splines. (Tapped the nut, not the actual threaded end) When I did mine, it wasn’t under ideal conditions. Gravel driveway and freezing cold.
And of course, one of the dust seals wasn’t shipped with my order, so that put me further behind.

I ended up pulling the new brg out to punch out the sensor, could not have gotten it out with hub/brg installed. I assume I can drive it with the sensor gone until my new one comes in?? I just won't have the abs?

Bolt the outer sensor piece in and drive it. It would be best to avoid driving in the rain since the O ring is no longer there to keep water out.
