I have a 1999 Tacoma 2.4l 2wd with a a43d automatic transmission that only has 1st and a little of 2nd gear left. Looking for what all other transmissions will fit without major modifications. I can add wiring to accommodate a lockup convertor if needed. I have been told that an a340e will possibly fit but would like to hear it from someone that has done it. Model #'s and years and engine sizes of possible donors please. I think I can swap bell housings if needed. My transmission is with a slip yoke not a flange for driveshaft. Can a flange be unbolted and put a slip yoke in its place or can a flange be put on in place of slip yoke on my driveshaft?

    Thanks for any info.

Any reason why you don’t just get another A43D?

Local availability is reason for looking for other options that would fit. Also had been told by one wrecking yard that a340e was a heavy duty option that they did have. the serial number on theirs showed 2004 (04br-17738)and my info at that time showed only good thru 2000 and only a43d. Did not appear to match after 183 mile trip to pickup. Mine is still in truck so harder to compare and I thought someone might know already.

I should add the differences in 5-lug 2.4l transmissions are as follows:

1995-2000: A43D, this was the column shift model
2001-2003: A44D, this was the floor shift model

I believe they’re exactly the same in exception of the shift linkage, but I could be wrong.

The A340E very well may be able to fit. The earlier 5-lugs with the 5VZ-FE v6 was mated to the A340E, as it is in 6-Lug trucks.

The 2RZ is basically identical to the 3RZ in exception of the top end design, so it may fit.
