Hey guys....newb to the group here! Just purchased my first Tacoma! Doing a 4x4 swap on it (couldnt pass on buying it with the condition and mileage on it), but i have a loooot of questions, and will have plenty more in the future, I'm sure!
First, can i use the tranny/transfer case and other 4x4 parts from a 1995 4runner sr5, both have the 3.4 liter engine, to put on my 1999 tacoma prerunner.....?
My goal is to do ifs manual locking.....but do i have to have a 96-2000 model...?

As long as it has a 3.4 in it then the r150 should be behind it and will work for what you are doing.

Edit: if it's manual otherwise it will be the A340

What transmission is in each vehicle? Auto or Manual?

The 4Runner will be ADD. Only 1995-2000 Tacomas came with Manual Hubs and that is the only vehicle you will find the correct steering Knuckle and manual hub setup on.

I noticed you said 1995 4Runner. That's a 2nd Generation 4Runner and you need a 3rd Generation 4Runner which were made from 1996-2002 so no the 1995 components will not work.

I went through the 4WD PreRunner conversion process on my 1998 PreRunner over the last eight months. I can answer any questions you have.

He said it has the 3.4 so it's probably a 95-1/2 when they switched to the 3rd gen. Or like you said it's a 2nd gen and someone got to it with a 3.4 swap

Didn't the 2nd Gen T4R's have the 3VZ-E v6? You're right if it has the 3.4l then it would probably be an early 3rd Gen. Would be interesting if someone swapped a 5VZ into a 2nd Gen.

I remember seeing a notification that a 1995 4Runner 4WD pulled in at my local pick-n-pull and I spent three hours trying to remove the transfer case (and failing) - learning later I couldn't even use it anyway since the transfer case flange drops on the opposite side.

I assumed it work work since it was within AISIN's A340 line of transmissions - the 2nd Gen used the A340H and I needed the A340F.

It's possible that it has a swap. I know it was common because ppl were tired of the 3.slow. I guess he will have to fill us in on the rest of the deets.

For the entire 1st Generation, PreRunner 2WD Automatic used the A340E. The 4x4 Automatic used A340F.

A340E and A340F are exactly the same. The only difference is the length of the output shaft, so some people swap their output shaft in the A340E with one from an A340F. You can't use an 03/04 v6 Transmission because Toyota started using the ETCS-I electronic throttle system. Older 3rd Gen 4Runners have this too.

^^ this and the output shaft for the A340F is 23 spline. Mt 2wd saw 21 spline.

Im trying to do a auto to manual swap on my 99prerunner with the 2.7. I am not trying to go 4x4 if I don't have to at this moment. But I'm curious if the W59 in the 4x2 is the same as the one in the prerunner. Do the gear ratios change at all from 2.7-2.4, will I be able to find a bell housing to match up to my 2.7 for it?
And since the 2.7 only came with a 4speed in 4x4 that means all the ECU's and trannys are all 4x4. If I get a 4x4 trans can I just leave the transfer case off and find a bell housing that goes from trans to engine? Should I just install a w59 with TCase and leave it till I'm ready to go 4x4? Sorry to hijack this thread I just haven't seen anyone do a manual swap without the 4x4. Ill make my own thread but thought I'd get a lot of "use the search function" lol but I'll do it now that I'm realizing this has gone from a simple question to a long ass one lol

OK. One thing at a time.

You're trying to do an auto to manual swap, I assume? You will need to use the Manual computer instead of the Automatic, however I do think there's a way to truck the Auto ECU into thinking it's a Manual. I can't remember.

Here are some spreadsheets I made saying what the different first gen transmission were and what application they're for.

I absolutely recommend going to 4x4 now if you're doing a transmission swap. You will save a lot of money, time, and grief doing it all at once.

Well I ended up buying a manual ECU on eBay and I picking up a W59 trans and transfer case along with the clutch pedals and slave/master cylinders next week up in Reno.

I’ll get the transmission running while I collect the 4x4 parts I’ll need.

Where in Reno? I called just about every junkyard on the Western Seaboard and NNAWG Reno Airport had the most Tacoma selection at a very cheap price.
