Very well done. I bought four of the old Phillips Ecovantage 30W=50W 750 lumen bulbs from Home Depot right before they were discontinued so won't need to worry about more for awhile. How did you know they were HIR and not standard halogen? I didn't notice any reference to that in the Ecovantage or new product spec. Is that what "sparkling" means in the description? Or was it the 30W=50W reference?

Yeah, I missed the boat trying to find them before they evaporated, I looked. I did just find some on ebay domestically for a steal here, after ordering 4 of the new version (with same specs as the old) from the UK for significantly more.

I'm always skeptical of any Xwatt=Ywatt claims unless the manufacture is well established/respectable and backs it with actual lumen output specs as Philips does. (PIAA drives me crazy for this reason, they always publish Xw=Yw but never publish actual output specs). The drastic increase in lumens at such a low wattage compared to their standard halogen line could only mean HIRs, there is only so much you can do with a halogen bulb to increase performance, without tanking the bulb life, and the HIRs have a 4000hr life.

Toshiba, who originally developed the HIR technology sold it to Philips. If you look at the actual product name/specs published by Philips, it does have IR in the name and specifications, just not right next to halogen designation to call it out specifically as HIR.
Check out the Philips spec sheet here.
    Product name: MASTERCapsule 30W GY6.35 12V IR 1CT/5X10F
    Bulb finish: IR coated

Long term tests seem good. Time for me to do this.

Did this today, used the Phillips Ecosmart 35w bulbs. Works great. Sweet!

One thing though, since I tow a boat often, will this mod cause me an issue? I wonder if I need to put a relay or something in?

Great write up man. I dropped The flash wolves led in first to see how they do with my front tinted windows at night. Might upgrade to these if they don’t work like i want.

I installed these today. Not my bulb pic but I bought the same ones from Lowes. 6/7 bucks each. I used my Dremel to trim them. So far so good!

Only the middle longer bolt had a plastic washer. Was instantly curious if the shorter top & bottom bolts would benefit from one.

Great mod, I just changed mine to some Philips 886 bulbs, and it's almost light headlights when reversing now. I had some LED reverse lights which were very bright, but they didn't throw the light in the right direction. They were a brightness decrease compared to stock.

I cut them by scoring the metal with snippers, and bending it back and forth with needle nose pliers. It was a really clean cut. The cutting wheel on the dremel couldn't reach, and this was easier.

If you're going to use LEDs, you need to use one that doesn't have a focused beam (the housing has a fresnel diffuser built in that wastes the light from those). I tried a pair of JDM replacements with a focused beam and they were terrible on the Tacoma; similar ones work great on my RX8 which has a clear housing though. A LED replacement that's configured like these (I've got the Philips version, but can't find it online) will give you good results as a direct swap for the OEM bulbs. I don't know if this particular brand "Alla" is any good, just posting it as an example of the configuration you want. You need omnidirectional light to work with the Tacoma housing/lens setup.

I used these. They look bright in the housing, but not good light output. Very hard to see at night with tint.

Those are rated at 230 lumens. The ones I used are in the 900-1000 lumen range (42 separate LED units in each wedge, vs 18 in the ones you tried). I really only have my back up camera when I'm backing at night though, since my soft topper rear window is 8-9 years old and oxidized to the point where my inside mirror is useless (except for the backup cam screen built into it). I do also have some small LED "bars" (6 inch, single row) mounted in my bumper but those tend to wash out the camera view when I'm on pavement so I don't use them often.
