It sure is a lot but when you add up a typical build w/ new UCAs, LCAs, spindle, regearing, rear disc conversion - close enough?

Forgot to mention, to fit the 37s - cab mount relo is required.

Or and I know this just sounds crazy but hear me out. For a 1/4th the cost buy a nice mid-travel kit and get a good alignment done by someone that knows what they're doing.

Totally agree. Posted this on my build thread the other day but haven't gotten any engagement, so figured I'd chime in here too. Below are some of my thoughts about portals as well as links to some solid content about the portals specifically design for out Tacoma platform. Would love to hear everyone's thoughts.

I listened to a podcast on the 74Weld Tacoma portals and have recently been seeing some of the shops in Colorado offer Werewolf portals. After learning more about portals, I honestly think the price tag of ~$14,500 for the Werewolfs is really not that bad... with portals you essentially bypass a lot of big-time modifications that our trucks need to run a 38" tire properly. It essentially packages the lift, & regear and deletes the need for a CMC or relocation, extensive fender cutting / tubing, custom length CVs (most people would get for long travel setups), etc.. The parts & labor (if paying a shop to install these things) would likely easily bypass that $14.5k price tag of the portals. Plus, you can't achieve the same ground clearance with the more traditional modifications as you can with portals given their offset between the axle shaft and the hub mounting surface.

Curious to hear other opinions. Here is the podcast link to the 74Weld interview with their founder. He provides some really solid information on what portals are, how they work, how they're manufactured, etc.

Cab mount relocation is required with the portals as well, because the portal boxes increase scrub radius significantly.

Compared to say, RCLT, you will also need to source your own steering solution, as 74Weld doesn't make a beefier Tacoma rack like they do with the Bronco.

BTW - you do need to do a CMC or CR since the turn radios is so much wider.

Remember a 37" tire is going to be 65-70lbs min., you're also adding 3.5" to the track width per side all on stock a-arm mounts (unless you do more work/$) and stock steering (oh but 74 weld is working on that to $$$). and you have not gained any travel. If your intent is to rock crawl buy a jeep or a buggy.

Yep, can’t agree more. I don’t think I’d ever personally hardcore rock crawl my truck. Easier to buy a Willy or Rubicon JL, slap a small lift on with like 37s, and profit.

But then you’d be driving a Jeep.

No, the parallels don’t really work because you can build a truck so that’s it great fun on the rocks and great fun on the dunes. Much harder to make a Jeep do both.

The Baja builds are _way_ more expensive than any of the crawler builds.

Nothing wrong with driving a Jeep. But I would never build my Tacoma as rock crawler just simply do to the seating position and poor visibility over the hood.
