To all the taco 6 speed manual owners...

I am looking to get a tacoma 6 m/t later on probably next yr, I noticed when you go to reverse. it goes all the left and up. Do you have to push it hard to the left to get into reverse or is it too easy that you guys have issue switching from R to 1 gear?

    sorry for the stupid question...
    thx

takes some aim & force. add a short shift kit and it will increase that by quite a bit.

I just purchased my 6-speed MT and I've accidentally shifrted into R a few times. I think it was due to my overthinking it and being in a hurry to get to 1st gear. I love MT's and wouldn't trade for an AT.

I just slap it a lil and it pops in. Never had the issue of going into first accidentally.

by the way, if you choose an AT over MT for this it would be the most ironic move ever on TW. but don't do it just for the biscuit.

I had a 6spd Corolla before my Tacoma. That thing had no gate effort to put it into reverse and I regularly did when trying to find first. The Tacoma had way better feel and more spring force putting it into reverse. I have never accidentally put it into reverse. I installed the URD short shifter and that increased the effort too, but not in a bad way. I felt it was a great improvement to the driving experience.

Good luck with your future purchase.

It is a hard left and up. If you slap the shifter all the way left it will go into reverse easier. Trucks generally do not need very fast shifts.

You should never be in that much of a hurry going into 1st

1st and rev are very close. More so than any other manual car I've had before. I've shifted into rev twice by mistake but both times in a parking lot. It was more of a new car thing and didn't happen after i got more used to it.

Speaking of this subject, funny/scary thing happened an out a month ago. I was behind a taco in my work truck. He had new car tags on it. Light turned green anf he threw it in reverse. I coukd tell he was nervous when it happened but i knew he was a noob with the manual transmission:rofl:

You have to put a little extra force in order to get it to into reverse. Maybe a slight learning curve when you first get it for a day or so. But you get used to it and shouldn’t have a problem ever accidentally going into reverse.

I've made the mistake of going for first and getting reverse a couple times. I've owned five other manual transmission cars, several of which were junkers, and never had the problem before. I'm not exactly sure why the difference seems to be a bit less defined in my Tacoma. Still wouldn't trade it for an automatic though.

wow... I guess I need to test drive a 6 speed m/t tacoma. I drove a 6 sp VW golf... it was great... you have to push down to go into reverse to the left. I also drove a basic Kia soul and you had to life this ring in order to get into reverse.... why dont toyota do that? I still have my 2009 Tacoma... love the truck... I have almost 180k miles. I want to keep this as my 2nd truck and get a 6pd tacoma TRD PRO! BOOM!!!!

Kia doesn't make manual cars! And as for VW, wait until the wiring fails on you! :boink:

Kia soul has a manual... it was a 2015. My old colleague had it... it was so basic that it had roll down windows!

I've done it a couple of times on accident. It beeps and turns on the back up camera is you hit reverse. In those instances it's obvious if you are paying attention it shouldn't be a problem.

I go 3rd from reverse more often, that is also obvious.

to everyone else it's really obvious when you are restarting your truck after the stall.

I only accidentally shift in to reverse when I’m drunk.

I dont think youll have any issues. May as well test drive one though. Just like other posters ahead of me said, you definitely have to have a good push over before you up to R
