Apologies if his is elsewhere, I couldn’t find it if it had been asked already. But has anyone seen crew cab short box Tacoma’s with a 6’ flatbed installed?

I’m looking at TRD OR options but hate that there wasnt a crew cab long bed option in the 2nd gens and am wondering about the considerations. Thanks for any direction you can provide.

The 6 foot bed on the 2nd gen is the long bed version

By crew cab you mean 4 door correct? If so it came in a 5 or 6 foot bed.

Maybe I wasn't clear about my question so I'll be more thorough:

I used the shorthand "TRD OR" above to mean TRD off road. I am unaware that there was a 6' bed option on double cab (4 door / crew cab) OffRoad models. If there was, I am mistaken, but I haven't seen any.

My question is, more precisely: Is there any reason a 6' FLATBED cannot fit on a frame designed for a 5' SHORT BED?

Won’t fit unless you modify it. The space between the cab and wheel wells is shorter on the 5’ bed.

If he builds a flat bed there are no wheel wells.

I don't know 100% for sure, but don't see why it couldn't be done. You might have issues with the hitch for towing, it would be like towing with the tailgate down. But if you don't tow, or I suppose there are ways around that.

Yeah, didn’t think of that. But a 6’ flat bed in a 5’ space may look like a flatbed tow truck.

Isn't it actually a 5.5 bed frame he wants to put a 6' flatbed on? I'm certain there is only a 6" difference.

I don't know what the other considerations are.

The short bed is only 5ft (about 3 inches over 5ft if measured from the outside and a few inches under 5ft when measured from the inside) and the long bed is 6ft (again, longer than 6ft from the outside but shorter than 6ft from the inside).

Thanks for the thoughts all - I had a flatbed on my F250 and loved it, and am considering doing it on a 2nd gen double cab, but if I am going to do it, I am having a difficult time justifying a 5' flatty. The towing is something I hadn't considered so thanks for that. The knapheide bed I had on my F250 had the hitch integrated with the flatbed itself, but to be honest I never paid any attention to how it was tied into the frame. it had a gooseneck hatch too..

Good things to think about. If anyone runs across a 2nd gen double cab with a 6' flatbed I'd love to see it and get some ideas.

Was searching something else and this thread popped up. To answer your question, yes you can fit a 6ft flat bed on a 5ft box chassis truck.

This is my truck. 2017 TRD OR with a double cab and originally had a 5ft box and now fitted with a 6ft flatbed.
