I use 5w30 in mine. Has worked fine. The supposed reason for 0w20 is gas mileage. Before I moved to Knoxville my mileage was 22 to 24 in the Arizona mountains.

You can run pretty much anything you want from 0W-20 to 15W-40, provided you don’t take 10W-30 below 0°F or 15W-40 below 10°F. The various viscosities of oil are nowhere near as drastically far apart as they sound.

I did my first oil change at 5k miles with synthetic 5w30 (because it’s what I had on hand). Seems like a minuscule difference, but I swear it’s the slightest bit more sluggish.

I will be going back to 0w30 when Costco puts their synthetic back on sale and I hit 10k miles.

If it’s sluggish on 5W-30, it’s going to be sluggish on 0W-30.

Haha, Thanks for your thoughts on my perspective. I should have known I couldn’t share an oil opinion!

By Friday, folks will be recommending mineral oil.

They are the same operating viscosity. If you’re going to go back due to sluggishness, you need to go back to 0W-20. It’s not an opinion….0W-30 and 5W-30 are for all intents and purposes the same except for when they’re cold.

and actually…..mineral oil is a perfectly fine choice.

What's wrong with the recommended 0W-20?

Because 0W-20 is for gen Z kids. Us old timers use 20W-50 or 15W-40.

You’ve been a member for almost 8 years now.
    You should know by now.

    The oil.
The oil is what’s wrong with it.

    OP, I’m sorry man.
But I really can not help you.
Never owned a 3.5 or ran the oil you’re asking about.

But I can almost bet, you’ll be more confused about what to use by the time this thread reaches the weeks end.

If you don't run 0W-20 you'll be placed on an FBI watch list where you'll eventually get picked up in the cover of night and taken to a secret factory in siberia where you'll be forced to run tests on Tacoma oil samples for the rest of your life.
    oil is serious shit.

Always have. It's getting hard to find 5w-30 in conventional oil. I run synthetic in my RV because that what the guy who owned it before me used.
I'm old school and like conventional oil

Xw-30 isn’t really all that different from 0w-20. Keep in mind though, most wear occurs at engine startup. All other things being equal, lighter oils better protect earlier at startup. You can make up for this somewhat by selecting extremely high quality oils.

Go with Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 5w-30 or Amsoil 0w-30 if you want a bit more viscosity at operating temp while also maintaining pretty good low temp performance.

I put in the 5w-30 from Costco. No difference at all.

According to the car care nut (Toyota service) you should use the oil that is stamped on the filler cap. Why wouldn’t you follow what the Toyota engineers state. I am not saying it won’t work but a lot of things will work but don’t follow recommendations.
