Alright guys and gals I'm new to this forum so I need some help with a Tacoma I just bought. It has a 6 inch fabtech lift but I want to change the rear shocks because everytime I hit a bump I can feel it hit hard. So I'm thinking of running 5100 bilstein shocks but can't find them anywhere on the websites. Do you guys think that's a good idea to run those with the fabtech suspension?

    Tons of websites carry 5100s.

    Where are you looking exactly?

Did you figure out your shock length needs? I ask because I'm sure that kit uses big ass blocks in the rear.

    This.

5100's are fine more many applications and ride pretty nice for the price, just make sure you get the correct length. Measuring the collapsed and extended length of the shocks currently on there will be a good first step.

Firstly, the drop bracket lifts aren't well favored by many who actually wheel and the long-term support from the 4 wheel industry as a whole isn't that great. That being said, if you are looking for something like "5100s for a 6" Fabtech lift", you're not going to find much. But you can remove one of your existing shocks and measure the extended vs collapsed length of the shock, and then get 5100's which match that. But you'll want to talk to a dealer and let them walk you through that process.

When you say "hit" do you think that the current shocks are just blown? or do you think you should maybe inspect things and see if a larger bump stop might help the situation as well?

I've been on bilstein shocks website, toytec, and just random websites on Google. honestly I just thought it was 6 inch shocks. I'm new to all this suspension so if you guys can point me in the right direction would be great. I actually have it at the mechanic's right now getting some things done to it. I could ask them if they can let me know the length of the shock so I know what i actually have to look for

If he's looking for Tacoma-specific shocks then I can believe it.

Shockwarehouse can easily narrow down to some part number variants that'll work for his application, once he finds out length needed. Match the valving similar to that of what's found on a Tacoma, and you're set.

Andy, when I say it "hit" it could be that the shock is blown. It's like a dry hit but only my right rear shock. I took it into the shop so they can take off an extra leaf that the last owner had put on it and get that all inspected make sure it's good. What do you mean a larger bump stop?

wait... a previous ower put 6" lift blocks and an AAL? Good lord.

It sounds like you need to do some reading up of suspension components, before making any more decisions.

Bump stops in general are placed between suspension components and the frame to soften the contact and limit the travel of the suspension. If your bump stops aren't doing their job correctly, that could be a thing, but in the rear, it would mean that the suspension has to compress all the way.. I'm not sure how likely that is just driving around on the street...

In the opposite direction though, if the axle is dropping more than the shock has the capacity, then you might feel the suspension bottom out, in which case, you actually want limit straps to keep the axle within range of the shock (or shocks with a longer extension... provided that the bump stop is limiting how far the axle can compress up correctly)

Thanks man. I'm just new to this suspension thing. I had a 2001 tacoma before this one but it was all stock. Had to sell it for a reason. just bought this Tacoma a couple months ago and just trying make the ride a lot smoother than it is now

Measuring the existing shock is only of value if the previous install used the correct length shock or some type of shock mount extender.

Whoever does the measuring needs to know what they are looking at.

Also, I agree that a DB lift 'can' wheel ok 'most' of the time. However, since there is no actual ground clearance added at the axle lines, the impression of "I have an extra 6" isn't exactly correct.

OP, since you don't give a location, has the truck lived in salt country? A detailed inspection of the frame for rust is in order if it has, including the areas where the frame was cut out up front to accommodate this particular lift.

Sure they can. And I didn't say they couldn't. I said they aren't favorable, and that is true. No sense in increasing your COG without gaining clearance under the axles.

I bet the few FT DB lift dude I know wheel harder than most mall rated tacoma. I've seen nice and shiny fox, ads, kings tacoma do nothing but travel through bypass instead of obstacles.
