Or do you just go with the 4 tire rotation - and ignore the spare in this equation?

I am new to Tacos... - What happens when you have 4 well worn tires and then you put the spare on? Does this not cause trouble with the 4WD system?
Maybe event he 2 WD mode in the case that you end up with the new spare in the rear?

Toyota provided a steelie for the spare, so they are not assuming a 5 wheel rotation by owners...

So in order to do a 5 wheel rotation, then an additional wheel must be purchased...

I know my previous AWD vehicles had a tight tolerance of a couple 32nds before the AWD system acted-up. (Toyota Sienna, BMW IX, etc.).

Are the Tacos more forgiving in terms of different wear between axels (front to back) or side to side?

Are there any instances of trouble due to different tire wear?

    Thanks!

It's hard enough to remember the cross-rotation every other time. For me, trying to juggle five tires wouldn't work out for long.

Tacomas are not awd. You're good.
A lot of Tacomas are driving around with bigger tires and little spares.
Forget your spare, (other than checking pressure)..
I move them around when I swap winters, front to back back to front.

I have done this for the past 7/8 years (2 cars). Assuming you can source a reasonably priced 5th wheel it makes sense.
    - Easier to rotate: you can just jack one corner at a time
    - if you end up with a ruined tire say 33-66% thru their wear life. You don’t have to think about a mismatched replacement, or just getting a whole new set and forgoing the unused life of the other 3.
    - if you ruin a wheel, you Allready have a replacement (vs ordering and waiting on a new one (assuming it is even available)
    - maybe not so true in our applications. But most spares for passenger cars are rated really bad. Like 55mph or less, 50 miles max. Imagine being out of town, needing a new tire on no notice. (It sucks. BTDT)

    1 to 2, 2 to 3, 3 to 4, 4 to 5, 5 to 1 every oil change... that’s the way I’ve always done it, right or wrong.

If its wasn't for the TPMS sensor and having to deal with activating the one on the spare tire, I would rotate the spare tire in there. Since I don't have a techstream I ignore the spare.

I do however have a matching 285/75/16 spare tire

Forgot to add... (pissed off about it also). Current gen 3 can only save 4 TPMS at a time. So if you want to rotate the 5 th one in. You either have to: tolerate the damn tire red light in the dash, or have access to tech stream. Or pay dealer to reset.

so for me, this is the deal breaker. This week when I get tires, I’m going with 4 only.
(Cheap Job by Toyota with this... my 2013 VW and 2008 BMW managed throwing a 5th wheel in the mix no problem)

Just front to rear swap is all I ever do on the Tacomas. Yeah the spare is a plain ol steel one. I often wondered what will or would happen if I had to run the factory spare on my wife's truck as its quite a bit smaller diameter. Another vehicle with matching spare wheel and tire I will put in the rotation thing.

Mostly electrical shit that nobody cares about.
Reasons to do five tire rotation:
Increase the time between tire changes by 25%... that's it.

    Reasons against five tire rotation:
    Fifth alloy wheel costs money.
TPMS will be wonky since the computer only holds four codes.
    Slightly more complicated rotation procedure.

Doesn't really make sense when you weigh out the benefits.

It's no problem, except for 4wd use. 2wd and AWD cars come with compact spares. So on the Taco, the open diffs will handle it.

My method of prep, which would be different if being serious about an extended expedition, is a plug kit on board for the small stuff. The spare is there if needed to limp home to end the wheeling day or whatever. This mainly goes back to my current experience of not really having to deal with any significant punctures in decades. The Taco is my first truck, but wheeling hasn't caused any issues yet.

Lots of us northerners have winter tires too, so 8 tires is enough, the spare can stay and rot.

The light stops. I run winters without TPMS and no light unless I drive for more than 20 minutes..

What if a) your tire is larger than your spare (theoretically 265/70r16 vs 265/75r16) and b) you live 350km from a tire shop? Can you drive that far on a different size tire?

I don't follow how method of rotation can "pay for" a whole set of tires. Please explain.
