There's one guy (girl? person? @Carmaker1) here (TacomaWorld) who posts who actually knows what's going on. I strongly suggest searching their posts and taking it as gospel as much as one can from Toyota.

2005-present Frontier 205.5 inches long. Or 1st gen Tacoma 202.9 inches long. The current Tacoma is not as big as the 1st gen Tundra but it sure has grown.

The 3rd Gen Tacoma is probably closer in size to the T-100 than the early Tundra's.

I owned a 2004 Tundra access cab and kind of find it interesting that there is less than 1 inch difference in the width. You could fit a 4x8 sheet of plywood between the fenderwells on the tundra but the tacoma is a couple inches narrower in the bed.

The Tacoma only needs 2 more inches on each side to fit a sheet of plywood between the wheel wells - sure seems like they could have added those 2 inches without causing any tire rubbing issues.

Oh well, at least they have us those slots to fit a 2x6 horizontally to rest the plywood on. .

I have found (2) 2x4's fit those slots much tighter fit than a 2x6.

front suspension, upper/lower control arms give a basically mid-travel setup for cheap. But the front tires do stick out further than stock and most ignore it, others have custom glass made. It’s a little wonky looking

That is pretty cool in the end. If it is the same for Tacos, I bet we see a lot of that since there will be some pickings by the time the Taco launches.

I’d like Toyota to bring back a regular cab Tacoma, but with an 8’ bed. They can make the cab size larger so the overall proportions don’t look idiotic. (Thinking T-100) Then use that extra cab room to improve the seating position for a comfortable bench seat with fold-down center armrest.

Retune (however much was possible) the 2.7L 2tr-fe, designating it some new engine code, low boost forced induction perfectly paired with our choice of either a 6 speed manual or 8 speed automatic, and call it a day. Give folks who don’t know any better other engine/cab/bed choices.

Base all of the other configurations of the Tacoma around the above. I’ll take one in black. Then I’ll remove the bed and put a steel flatbed on it with a headache rack, lift it for no good reason whatsoever, and 35’s, and mount of toolbox right in the center between the bed sides right up against the back of the cab.

I’ll use it 8 times a year the way it will look it gets used, and drive it forever, or just whenever I’m not driving my ‘07 regular cab. I know this isn’t 100% in response to the OP’s topic, but I haven’t posted in a while, started day-dreaming, so here ya go.

I found the seating was more comfy and the floor was lower. It had slightly less clearance.

    Axle shafts also.
I considered titan swapping my XTerra when I did my front strut assemblies, axle shafts, and hubs but decided not to because if the cost, since I would have needed upper and lower control arms as well.
So many parts were rusted solid and needed to be cut out and replaced that, by the time everything was done, I ended up replacing all the parts that I would have needed to if I’d just titan swapped from the jump. Talk about frustrating hahah I regretted not just pulling the trigger on the swap.

I thought they had to get custom axle shafts made, or at least a certain company made the connection piece, but you’re probably right. The swap was cool but it did add up quick if you couldn’t source the parts from a yard

Since no one has answered your question, why don't you tell us why you think a shared platform weakens both the Tundra and Tacoma? I don't see the negatives, so tell me what i am missing.

If they could keep the Tacoma the same size with a bigger back seat. It would be perfect.
I read the Landcruiser is losing the 3rd row seats and all the luxury features. Which will bring down the price and sell more. They are also making it more offroad capable then the current one. And the Lexus LX is going to get all the Luxury Lexus can put in it. They are using the Bentley Bentayga as its target.

    Mostly dust and dirt.
While I’m certainly no engineer it seems to me that so many changes would need to be done with both chassis’s that either the Tacoma will be way overweight or the Tundra would be weakened.
I’m not sure how Nissan does it with the Titan and Frontier.
