It’s about time for a lot of us to do the first oil change. Procedure is the same as it’s always been, just new locations of the plug and filter.

You still only need a 14mm for the drain plug and I needed a 12mm to remove the felt skid plate thing. Beware, my factory oil filter was super tight. I was able to twist it off with rubber gloves but having a filter wrench might be a good idea.

Manual calls for 5.9 quarts with Filter. I did 5.5 which put me right in the middle of the dip stick.

Oil Filter is 90915-YZZN1. Drain bolt still uses the standard blue washer.

This is the 14mm drain plug. I removed the plastic housing just to see what's under it. There is no reason to remove it, the draining oil will not run under it. If you do take it off, be easy when reinstalling because the bolts screw straight into the block.

I totally underestimated the flow and made a huge mess as usual.

Reinstall your drain plug with washer. Plug torque is 40nm according to a post below.

Next is the filter, it is located on the front of the engine under the skid plate. Remove the 4 13mm bolts to get to it.

Pretty good design with the little funnel, but you still need a piece of cardboard to keep oil off the frame.

Don't worry about oil filter part numbers, the 10009 is only used at the factory but its the same thing as the YZZN1.

Lastly, install your new filter and skid plate and fill with new oil.7816428F-6519-4135-B827-3BB5F354095A.jpg

That's it, now admire your truck.

Mostly electrical shit that nobody cares about.
    Back to spin-on!

I'd like to meet the bipolar motherfucker in engineering who decides which gen gets what style filter.

    Great post!

Any reliable online source selling OEM blue bolt washers? Or am I overthinking that aspect of the oil change?

Related question: Toyota Care only allows oil changes at factory recommended intervals; if I schedule oil change at 1000 miles they'll say "come back in 4000 miles"?

    Sincerely,
Admitted Amazon-er/DIYer/oil bolt washer re-user on most everything

You seem rather wound up about this. In the previous gen, half the Taco world wanted to know why they didn't go with a "normal" filter. But I don't recall anyone using the MF word.

It's either this guy or one of his other engineers.
