I believe that this topic is old, but I would like to talk from experience, I got a 4runner for my wife, the driving experience in comparison with my 3rd gen taco is huge, don't take me wrong I like my tacoma but I wish it had the 4runner transmission. Tell y'all your thoughts.

Some are going to say get a tune.
Some are going to say, did you test drive your truck before you bought it?
Some are going to say their truck drives fine and they have no issues.

Have you made sure your 2020 got the latest TSBs for transmission programming? :notsure:

This topic comes up multiple times a week, what else is there to say...?

It’s not the physical transmission that is causing your problems.
Truthfully, it is Toyota engineered ”tune” for mpgs for 3rd Gen Tacoma.

Don’t lug low revs in the Tacoma, use S mode, use ECT, and the system will learn your driving style.

Well I never said that the tacoma was rough but even after 2000 miles that's when the trans learn how anyone drives and with the latest update, still there's a huge difference between both trans

Well my point is comparing both organically( if this term makes sense) w/o using ECT or other methods

I don't have that experience but even if it happens the transition between gears in the 4runner is butter, tacoma is something else

The trans in both of my wife’s 4Runners have been better then my 2nd gen pickup. More power motor wise also. But I need a truck bed so what do you do.

    this shit again?

that said, I believe it is the power curve of the engine that is mated to the transmission that is the difference. My GF's 4R is nice, but I don't see why people think it sets the bar in this department, yes it seems to have more low end torque, but HP at the top? pffft

there’s a lot of stuff I “wish” my truck had, but I don’t dwell on it. Everything is always a trade off. It checks enough boxes for me that I’m satisfied.

I never said that I hate my truck, but never drove before a 4runner and YES the difference is hugeee, since I'm a doer at home I'll stick to a truck and enjoy my wife's 4runner for trips

Def agree Ive been driving the 3rd gen tacoma for 6 years and i still get pissed at the shitty transmission shifting at times. Ive just learned to live with it. Its the #1 thing wrong with these trucks in my opinion, everything else is fine. I wouldn’t buy another 3rd gen Tacoma because of it though. Seems like the only solution is a pricey tune.

    4 run, 2 don't
Funny that the transmission keeps getting brought up; the 4R and Tacoma don't even have the same engine

Yes, I guess we all know about the different engine, but still the trans swap is doable from factory

I know, the truck is paid off. I plan to drive it till the wheels fall off but Toyota seriously dropped the ball on the transmissions. It doesnt seem like they are failing prematurely though, so thats good. Seems like a software issue on the way it was programmed to shift. The Toyota employee who was in charge of it deserves to get slapped.

5-speed is pretty annoying in general. I’ve driven a 5-speed AT 2G taco for some time and it most definitely needs one more gear. Hard to believe Toyota hasn’t chucked a 6 speed in the 4Runner so far.

The 4.0L five speed versus 3.5L six speed is a dead horse.
