Howdy folks, wondering if an A340F from a 4 Runner would work in my Tacoma that has an A340F? I need to replace and notice that the cost is about 1/2 for the 4 runner trans compared to the Tacoma, plus there are about 3X available.

    Thanks,
    Shawn

    4 run, 2 don't
Can't comment on the transmission but if you perform said swap, don't mate the torque converter from your old transmission onto the 'new' transmission. Different stall speeds between the two vehicles.

    Yes it'll work.

HOWEVER, the VSS are located in different places. I wouldn't be surprised if some sensors were different too as well as the park neutral switch.

Also @Kwikvette has good advice. Torque converters are unique to each and every transmission, even of the same type. Always keep the transmission and original torque converter together unless damaged. CHECK RUNOUT! An uneven torque converter is bad news.

All can be swapped. The A340 line of transmissions were used on a lot of different vehicles.

Pretty amazing how many different vehicles have used this transmission.

Thanks for the input, have you done the swap I am looking to do specifically?

I’m familiar with transmission swaps like this because I converted my PreRunner 2WD to 4WD sand I had to research different transmissions. Your swap is a very common one but I’m sure someone will chime in with more info.

The Aisin A340E specifically was used on the Toyota Supra MKIV, the Jeep Grand Cherokee, and the Isuzu Bobtail Truck to name a few.

4Runners use the ABS tone rigs for the VSS. Taco's use a back port on the transfer case. So that part would still work fine. A far as the wiring being different I'm sure it probably is. Wiring diagrams from both rigs would help to re-pin everything to it's proper place.

    USE THE ORIGINAL TORQUE CONVERTER

Do not attempt to reuse the one that came off your old trans, I made this mistake and had to completely pull the trans out and install the original one.

-You will have to swap your neutral safety switch from the taco to the new trans.
-You will have to purchase a new speed sensor and gear for the transfer case. I got the gear (30 tooth) off of eBay for $20 and the sensor from Napa for around $180.
