I picked up a set of 5 star 4runner rims thinking the back spacing would be the same as the tacoma wheels. Come to find out its 4.625 an 1/8 of an inch more. If be running 285/75r16 so instead of just over half an inch (need to measure again) between the UCAs id be getting closer. Anybody run 285s that close?

I also thought of getting bora wheel adapters but I'd only run .75 as my wheels already stick out a bit. I have some room in the rim for a little extra stud thread but it would be Really close. I might have to do some grinding on the rim to fit the extra stud. That may work from the front but I hear the back end studs are longer. Is Changing the studs on the rear a bad idea for shorter ones? is it just as much as a PITA as the fronts? I wouldn't want to run any chances of spinning studs if I replaced them.

Photo below shows how much space I have between lug nuts. Keep in mind the holes are not the size of the lugs. Anybody think it would be a bad idea to take some of that filler out ? Would it be something that would make it really hard to balance?

if you do anything to the rims they will be ruined unless you bring it to a cnc machine to be mounted perfectly flat so it can be machine ground down perfectly level and even to the size you want.

why dont you just replace the lugs with longer ones? they are just pressed in and easy to replace.

as to the fit, if they don't rub fender or frame use them as is or add spacer if tire hits frame but only do what you have to do so don't overthink it.

Look at the picture. I just want to take off some meat between where it mounts to make a "pocket" where the original studs can go with the .75 adapter.

Longer studs would make it worse, I need shorter studs but I don't know much about replacing studs.

ok im not fully understanding why the pocket is needed but here is a video showing how easy it is to replace wheel studs

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nxRng9seYxQ

it can get tricky if there are clearance issues behind the hub so it may become necessary to remove the hub or even disconnect and sometimes slide the rear axle out a little to get the clearance you need to remove and replace them.

removing them can be made easier but cutting them short first before knocking then out but the clearance issues mainly come up when trying to put in the replacements from the back side. once they are in place you seat them by just adding washers for a spacer so you don't mess up the stud or the lug nut when tightening a lug nut to pull them fully seated in place and that's it.

this guy shows you how to use washers to do it

You could go with one inch spacers then the back should be ok, just make sure you get hubcentric ones. I have 3/4" boras on the front and the shorter studs work out fine, on the back however I'm still debating whether to cut down the studs or change them out. Only problem I'm having is when I ask the local auto shops about shorter studs they look at me like I'm talking a different language, if it isn't listed on their computer they are lost.

So the studs on the front are shorter than the rear from the factory?

Talked to the dude that owns BORA. Said in 20something years of spacers he's never had a single failure and that tensil strength loss is BS. He said he's never heard the tensile strength argument. If I do order some I'm just gonna cut the lugs and replace them with factory studs when I want to go back.
