Maybe this has all ready been discussed ? What's the difference in the two motors ? Is there some actual mechanical differences or is it just programing ? I'd like to have the 270 ponies the 4Runner gets vs the 236 my Taco has. Don't get me wrong I love the Tacoma how it is but a little more juice never hurt :).

Dual variable valve timing. Taco only gets (?) intake variable timing.

Why doesn't Toyota just have the same exact engine in the Tacoma so both are dual VVT-i?
The frontier has 260 hp, so 40 more in the Taco couldn't hurt.

Just to muddy the waters, both engine codes are 1GR-FE. However, they are definitely not the same engine.

My Tacoma has an oil filter right on top at the front of the engine. It's the most convenient location for an oil filter I've ever seen, and I love it.

My wife's 4Runner has the older Camry style filter where it's not a self contained unit. You actually open a compartment and remove the media and some o-rings that all get replaced. I have yet to do it, as she is still under toyota-care; but I'm not entirely looking forward to it.

    The 2004-2009 4Runner 4.0L V6 and 2005-2015 Tacoma 4.0L V6 engines are the SAME, right?

It is just the Cost cutting....More HP sounds great BUT I think they have similar LOW END torque/power?

We own both too my wife has 4runner I have the Tacoma. 4Runner does have more power and better MPG but takes much longer to do an oil change with that other style oil filter.

newer 4runner motor is dual VVTI. It gets 270 HP as compared to the tacoma 236 HP. WITH better MPGs.

I wished they put the motor in the tacomas in the 2012 refresh. Didn't happen. But I'm sure the next tacoma will have something even cooler.

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
Runner has a little more hp due to the dual variable valve timing, that's about it. They need to put that motor in the Tacoma and retire the current 4.0 imo.

    not worth it.

they are going to go with the 3.5L 2GR-FSE in the 2016 taco.

    YES!

270 naturally-aspirated ponies would really benefit the Tacoma!

Everything about the 4runner is better than the tacoma. It's just something you have to get used to.

    Edit: Except the resale value.

You'd think it would be more cost effective for Toyota to go that route, that way they wouldn't have to spend more money producing both at the same time.

I'd be so happy with that dual VVTi motor. averages 20-24 MPGs. I'd love that.

I heard the 2016 is getting the 2.0 turbo that's in the lexus NX. the 2.0 turbo has almost identical output as the current 4.0 but with 25 MPG.
