Forgive what I admit is an odd question but after four-wheeling this past Saturday my GF has requested that I add four-point harnesses to the front seats of my Taco. Oh and that I stop taking her on trails which require the passenger-side of the truck be driving on the edge of a cliff. She’s new to 4Wheeling

So my question is has anyone added a set of harnesses to their Taco? If so what did you use and how did you attach them? I put them in my off-road car (which is how she knows four-point harnesses exist) but that car has a roll cage, obviously my Taco does not. My initial plan is to mount the new harnesses to the seat-mount bolts. These will not be used on-road and I’ll be keeping the stock seatbelts for on-road use.

And no I’m not trading her in for a girl who likes off-roading o_O I’m just trying to find a way for her to feel more safe so I don’t have to rationalize why we need to drive up/down/across/through or over whatever it is we come across :angrygirl:

So noted. The harnesses are mainly to make her feel safer. I’ve been off-roading in one form or another for 25+ years and generally have a pretty good grasp of what I and my vehicle can do (although I’m far from perfect). However she had never been on a dirt road prior to meeting me so anything which requires being in 4wd scares her. We’re working on remedying that LOL

Proper installation of a 4 pt harness will require the installation of a cage with a harness bar.

Please, please, do not run them over your shoulders, then over the top of the seat, and then bolt them down to the floor. This is a poor way to stay safe, but an excellent way to destroy your spine.

I’d do that but I’m also trying to make her our Navigator as well! I figure focusing on that may help take her mind off everything which can go wrong.

I’ve looked into the schroth harnesses, but never pulled the trigger due to unknown compatibility with the Tacoma’s.
I’ve also seen some people out in normal 4pt harnesses and have a shop fabricate a simple rear shoulder tie-down bar so the belts are at a proper angle. Basically just a bar from b-pillar to b-pillar.

You need a harness bar or roll bar. The straps should be horizontal going over the seatback. Angling them down steeply can cause spinal compression.

At the very least you'd need a bar running behind the seats so you could attach the vertical shoulder straps. Maybe you could build a bar that you bolt onto the seatbelt mount points and it could either be something that incorporated both of the front seats or one that attaches to each seat separately. Certainly not optimal but a much better option than running those straps to the floor.

A sillier option would be to attach something that stretches to the seatbelt mount points and then attach the vertical straps to that. But you wouldn't get any benefit from it, except visually.

I agree. There are very specific ways to install 4 and 5 point harnesses. Doing it wrong could seriously hurt the person.
Cage it, teach her how to brace herself better or trade her in. Don't half ass safety.
