I was just looking at Toyota's site and I guess they still offer the 4.6 in the tundra. I know swaps have been done but will we ever see this motor in the Tacoma? If no why not? Below are the specs for the 4.6 for those who don't know. It would be ideal in the 3rd gen.

    310 hp @ 5600 rpm
    327 lb.-ft. @ 3400 rpm
    4.6L i-FORCE V8 DOHC 32-Valve
    Dual Independent VVT-i
4WDemand part-time 4WD with electronically controlled transfer case and Automatic Limited-Slip Differential25(Auto LSD)

Not the answer you want to hear but it's because America. Why dont we get the Land cruiser 70 series, or the 5 cyl diesel. Million reasons.

I know right! Toyota put a v8 in the first gen tundra which wasn't much bigger than my 3rd gen. I can't see any downsides to putting it in a Tacoma. It gets 18mpg in the tundra and has decent power output. I bet it would do about 19-20 in the Tacoma.

My guess is that it would increase the cost, decrease the gas mileage and in general overkill for most looking at a mid size truck. Some will argue more power is good but then when the fuel economy suffers will bitch about that. Towing, not sure how much that would realistically increase because it's not just about engine torque but also about the size of the towing truck. Ever hear of the tail wagging the dog?

Well decent argument but I disagree. Think about it, tundra gets 18 mpg and is a lot bigger if the Tacoma could get 19-20 you're realistically not that far off the v6. Also every half ton I know can get pretty darn close to mpg as a Tacoma even the beast hemi. Cost I have no input as I don't work for Toyota. As to towing it most definetly would increase towing. Don't forget although it may only tow a little more it's how comfortable the truck is towing. More power means easier acceleration with a trailer and can keep up speed.

Here's some more numbers. I'm going to use ram 1500 because they have an option to go from a natural aspirated v6 to a v8. Building a ram 1500 standard with a v6 to upgrade to a hemi is a $1,150 dollar option. I'm willing to bet anyone with a Tacoma that wants to tow, put tires, lift, go off road would drop a grand like nothing.

There are full size trucks with V8s that do as well as the Tacoma in real world applications

I'm sure there are but he's talking about the 4.6L Toyota V8 which is what I was referencing. You're not going to convince me that transplanting the Toyota 4.6 V8 into the Tacoma will give you same or better mpg than the current V6 in the Tacomas.

It would be ideal for a 3rd gen AND 2nd gen. Are you a generationist???

I'd pay $5k for that engine swap. Still leaves room for a supercharger to get more power than the 4.0 with a supercharger!

    I can afford Gas.
Why would they do this when they can sell you a tundra if you wanted more power?

    That's the logic.

If I ever blow the motor or require a rebuild in my 3rd gen I'll be doing a diesel swap or a V8 swap. I really think this engine bay was designed for future introduction of a larger displacement engine. It's a matter of time I feel until this happens since increasing engine size has an effect on what class Toyota can put their vehicles in.

I also could be completely wrong and it will never happen...

Because the game is now about fuel economy. :notsure:

Notice how Toyota offered the V8 in the last 4Runner but not the current one, even though the platform-twin GX460 gets the 4.6L?

I'd optimally Like to have tundra power with Tacoma size, I don't tow very much but would like the v8 for Offroad and general preference of v8>v6
