I can tell you with 265 75 16, 400 lbs flatbed, ARB bumper, and steel cabled 10k winch at 6000 ft with mountains all around and not a flat spot to be had, stock gearing is anything but "fine". It is absolutely pathetic. Climbing a 12 mile 7200 ele grade at 40 in 3rd while cars zip around you at 70 because at that altitude your truck is barley putting 100 hp to the ground....it's just really sad. But I love my truck. 4.56 would be fine for flat landers...i am going 4.88 and won't look back.

Is that supposed to be 255/85 or 265/75?

I am in the same boat. As we currently have no need for a bigger tow vehicle I am finally getting around to completing the build on my anemic Tacoma. We drove from WA to MT this fall and I think I averaged around 13mpg with just my wife and I and our hunting gear, no topper, no nothing heavy. I put FN five stars on with the LT265/70/27 Duratracs and it is the wimpiest vehicle I have owned in a long time. Planning on doing the LC header, full AFE box and the URD AFR deal. Ultimately I am going to 275s so I may do 4.88s now as well. It is ridiculous that a 4cyl acc cab weighs 4000+lbs and puts down a whomping 110hp to the ground, give or take.

Yup, 4 mountain passes, good bit of wind. and well, 4cyl :( I have an Ultragauge and whilst I know it isn't 100% accurate or even probably 85% I think it gives a good idea of what kind of fuel you are using. It took almost 4 full tanks to go 800 miles from Olympia, WA to Havre, MT. Driving around town I get 21.9 on my Ultragauge and the math proves out pretty close to that, its just boring driving that way :)

The URD thing, to my understanding, helps the computer or tricks the computer in to giving the right amount of fuel to properly fuel for a full intake, headers, exhaust, whatever it may be. I am notoriously easy to trick with some clever marketing but, my plan is headers, AFR, gears.

Say man that contraption is for a engine that has been converted to forced induction (turbo or supercharger) that uses an AFR sensor to adjust the fueling parameters. It says it is only for boosted engines. What makes you think it will do any thing for our engine?

I have 4.56 gears with Goodyear Kevlar 265/75/16's. Leer cap, slider, dual batteries, with a basket rack and electronics. I live in Arvada, CO. With the extra weight and occasionally towing a 6X12 single axle trailer I found that the 4.56 are perfect. I drive like an old man(which I am) but have found that on the highways it does fine. The truck will cruise at 70 and do fine with the varying terrain especially in the mountains. I prefer the acceleration and quickness that I get with these gears. If you are going with a lot of armor I would recommend a larger tire and 4.88's. I use mine as a DD.

Yep. And Arvada is in the flat part of colorado.., now add a second fuel tank, RTT, front and rear winch, arb bumper, rear underbody box with recovery gear.....I need 4.88. No doubt in my mind.

With a 33" tire and 4.88s you'll be around 3k rpm probably more at 70 in a 5spd just fyi

In my 2000 Tacoma with that set up I was exactly at that. 75mph was close to 3300. Idk what the transmission gear ratios are in the 2nd gens to compare

You're right. My 2004 2.7 4X4 RC is right at 3000 rpm at 80 mph. I here talk about 4.10 gears a lot. My Taco has 3.90's. They are too high for running around on dirt roads and around town. They are good for long trips though. If the day ever comes and I have to rebuild a rear end or front diff I'll go with 4.56 with the stock tires. That would be just about perfect for short trips and running around in the mountains whether it be on dirt or pavement. Unless I have to take a long drive which when that time comes I won't have to in the Taco. I'll have a second vehicle for the 1500 mile vacations. This thing sucks on really long drives as it is even with the 3.90's especially since it has no cruise control. It's definitely not a long distance ride.
