For those who have had a 4.0 V6 for some time now or have a knowledge of reviews I would like to open this thread up for discussion. We all know Toyota is known for bulletproof engines. What issuses have come up with this particular engine? I have a 2015 Tacoma as it is the last of the Gen2s I'm assuming any issues have been addressed by now. Just looking to increase the knowledge of my engine.

Any input is appreciated. Just trying to learn more about my beloved truck both good and bad. Thanks in advance!!!

One can never have too many light bars.
As far as my engine goes its loud, ticks and really doesn't like going north of about 4000RPM. But reliability wise I think it's pretty top notch. Standard Maintenance is pretty easy on it too because everything is so accessible.

Just traded in my '05 4.0L with 301,000 Kms. Zero engine issues. Little loud, but fine otherwise. Regular maintenance (plugs/filter) and always ran Mobil 1 5w30.

155,000 on my 2007. Runs perfectly and uses zero oil between 10,000 mile oil changes. I have no concerns about getting at least another 100,000 out of it. Have a BIL with 220,000 on his.

I've got 150k miles on mine and no issues. Lots of varied driving, off-road, towing my race car, commuting etc. I give mine an Italian tune up every couple weeks(run right up to 5500rpm under load) and it loves it!

    Fantastic engine....

220,000 on my 05 4.0. Mobil 1 oil change, clean MAP sensor, throttle body and K & N air filter every 5000 miles, plugs every 30,000 miles and still runs strong. I just replaced the plugs with Denso and what a difference.

    Bone Stock.Why mess with perfection?Except...
3600 on mine. No issues. Had a 2011 Prerunner. Bought it with 25,000 miles. Put another 80,000 on it with no problems. Changed the oil on 2011 every 8000 to 12,000 miles or so with Mobile 1 Synthetic. That's the only maintenance I ever did on the truck.

My friend just bought a 2007 FJ Cruiser 4x4 with 301,000 miles. I test drove it for him since it's his first toyota and it was solid. Reason he bought it was great price ($8500), it was super clean, very smooth ride, no dents, rips, tears or color fading. It had all service record and don't see why it could do another 100,000.

I have 395k on mine. No real engine issues, just worn out idler pulleys.

OP, there were rare instances of cylinder misfires and head gaskets failing on 05 and in some case 06 models. Aside from that the motor is bullet proof.

There was a timing cover leak on early engines.

And @qnyla still romps his truck like this. It's kind of the most awesome thing ever. Seriously, there should be a TW meet in that truck's honor at 500k

    Just a bunch of fixes
THIS IS TRUE. I have been babying my yota since I got it. I cracked a head gasket on mine this week. 05 150k. CRACKED HEAD GASKET!!! Ugh getting it fixed though cause I know it will last so much longer. Anyone else have a gasket crack?
